If "some time" is months/years, then the battery that keeps system settings
could be fubar, laptops being as they are I have no idea where in the case
it is,

If you don't press F10, does it boot normally? If not, what happens?

You should only need to press F10 if you need to change the BIOS settings.

I suspect that since you cannot get into the BIOS setup, you have a hardware
problem.

You may have a corrupted data in the cmos ram. You may have to manually
reset this. See the Compaq site for the way to do this specific to your
model computer. It may be as simple as removing and reinserting the
battery. The bios routine summary shows no hard disk. That may also be the
problem. Some Compaq laptops keep part of the bios on a hidden partition on
the hard disk. And, the problem is not specific to Windows 98.

Hi,

Thanks for your input the problem was rectified by removing and re-inserting
the cmos battery. For others who come across this problem this page might
come in handy.

CMOS batteries dont recharge when power is applied to the pc, If the battery
voltage has fallen so low that it did not hold the cmos information, it
should be replaced
