Default accesing o/system 2

I set up my computer with a partitioned hard drive, with
win 98 on one partition and xp on the other. For some
reason 98 became corrupt so I decided to re-format that
partition and re-install 98, having done that I now
cannot access the partition with xp on it and 98 also
wont install because when I try to install it I get to
the point in the installation where the computer starts
to run windows for the first time and then the startup
crashes and the computer reeboots. As you can appreciate
this is an absolute disaster as all my work is on the xp
partition. Can anyone tell me how to access this
partition.Thanks

your post does not make much sense to me...
in one sentence you said you reinstalled win98...
then in the next you say you cannot install win98

at any rate...since the data you need is on the XP partition...
i'd say you should just forget (for now) about win98 and just do a repair of
your XP
bootloader which you destroyed by formatting your C: drive

just boot with your XP cd then from the command console
issue the command : fixboot

.Sorry to confuse you, what I meant to say was that I

tried to re-install 98 but the pc kept crashing during re-
installation. It seems that the cause was to much RAM I
had 1.3Gb installed, when I reduced it to 512Mb 98
installed ok. My xp version is the non bootable type( it
just upgrades Windows 98 to XP) will this still work.

All Windows XP CDs are bootable. You will have to boot from the CD to get
into the Repair Console and do the fixboot process philo has recommended.

.I'm really sorry to be taking up so much of your time,

but I've changed the boot device in the bios to the cdrom,
then when I try to boot up with the XP disc in the drive I
get the message 'searching for boot record from cdrom..not
found'. Either I'm doing something wrong or as I said
earlier this is a non bootable version. If so, is there
another way to fix this problem, or what could I be doing
wrong.

well, the XP cd *should* be bootable
but you can make a set of startup floppies from the cd (on another machine)

also...XP can be installed by using a slighlty modified win98 boot floppy.
you need to copy smartdrv.exe to the floppy and then load it
(you can just type smartdrv )
then log on to your cdrom drive and from XP's i386 folder
you can run winnt

and the installation should start

.Thanks for all your help philo, I have one more

question, is there an easy way to remove the partition
without losing my files on the XP part of the hard drive
so that I only have one drive and one operating system.
Many thanks

you cannot get rid of your C: drive
because all registry entries refer to XP as being on D:
once you get XP running again (and assuming you are not going to need win98)
just use your C: drive for storage

otherwise...you could put your present drive in another XP (or win2k)
machine
and retrieve all the data you need...
then start out fresh by deleting the whole drive and starting over
