Win98SE Shutdown problems
As previously posted I have had shutdown problems with WIN98 SE. Since replacing my HD it has gone from very rare to quite often. It only seems to happen after I've been online for ages but not with non-Internet use. I have checked out the MS trouble-shooting page on Shutdown issues but no improvement - even installed their patch. But still the same. Something of interest is that when it finishes NOT shutting down there is a horizontal green stripe at the top of the screen made up of vertical lines. I can remember getting this years ago on an entirely different system under WIN95. Any ideas as to what this is and what it means? |

"Jon_Hildrum" wrote in message ... Try here http://www.aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm Thanks! An excellent page and rather clearer than MS's example. Pity then that I have already formatted and re-installed. :-+ I seem to have got into the habit of a fresh install once year. Anyone think this is unnecessary? Anyone think it is a good habit to get into? |

Win98SE Shutdown problems

It's a common problem with 98 an 98SE. Just make sure you have scandisk set to not run after every improper shutdown. -- Later...... Labrat...... |:^{) |

Win98SE Shutdown problems
Another bad advice, like about the snake-oil programs for RAM freeing (in the
thread "Freeing-up Memory Without Re-booting?"). And even two bad advices. "No harm done"? Hmm... It's very easy to destroy the file structure on the HDDs in such case -- that's why Windows scans the drives after the improper shutdown. So your second advice "make sure you have scandisk set to not run after every improper shutdown" does not allow Windows to solve the possible problems immediately after they occur, and makes the things worse. -- Mikhail Zhilin MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) http://www.aha.ru/~mwz Sorry, no technical support by e-mail. Win98SE Shutdown problems
Really, REALLY bad advice here. Forcing Windows closed can corrupt files on
the hard drive and if SCANDISK is disabled you'll never know. -- Richard G. Harper [MVP Shell/User] * PLEASE post all messages and replies in the newsgroups * for the benefit of all. Win98SE Shutdown problems
If 98 won't shut down properly, just push the power button on the front of your computer. No harm done. It's a common problem with 98 an 98SE. As a postscript: Unfortunately pressing 'that' button is unavoidable sometimes but really my question was prompted by my HD accumulating a few bad clusters, which I presumed was linked to too many improper shut-downs. Eliminating Real Player Update from the Start-up seemed to bring a (so far) huge improvement. Knowing what to include and exclude from the Start-up still remains a quandary. Thanks! |
