Default OE in 0028.........VXD VMM06

Again, I'm looling for help/clarification from MVP or *savvy* user.

The exact OE is..............0028:C027F8AB VXD VMM06

I have a new install of Windows... two wks. old.
The system has not been stable. I'm backing up everyday.

Google didn't come up w/exact match.
0028 VXD VMM06, had more luck.

Windows starts up to this OE, I do ctl./alt/del and Windows continues to
load *only to be desktop w/selected bkgrnd color, mouse pointer that
moves......, and nothing more. I do ct/alt/del, I see only PC-cillin
running, no Explorer.

I do ctl/alt/del and restart and, Windows will load normally.

I went to Jim Elshelman's website, one of the best for Windows errors.
I learned about this being a W95 problem and,
I learned about setup problems in W98.

Can someone help.... RE this error and starting a W98 or W98SE puter, what
the fix may be.

I have such instability that I'm almost ready to take the puter down,
partition, format and do another clean install of
Windows.

I'm burned out, I love W98se, I have W-XP, I've been learning the internals
of Windows for yrs., you *must* if you want to maintain your OS. No pun
intended, I'm ready for a Macintosh!!

Thank you,
Star

Dan,
No Dan, P-4, new MB and P-4 cpu....(6) mos. ago. It was a P-3, new ram and
ram upgrade, HD is Maxtor and excellent, no conflicts and h/w except modem
and Iomega zip are relatively new!! The puter was only 2 yrs. old when it
was refurbished, the Jetway MB had leaky capacitors. I also put in a CD-RW
and a DVD.

Oh well....... sigh I've been looking a MAC's, I just want stability. I
didn't install XP most recently, had been dual booting. Have also been
considering the purchase of W-2000 Pro.....

No one has responded, except you...... sigh disappointed, Star

So, Star is your plan to format now and go with a dual-boot 98SE/XP Pro.
This is the way my system is configured with c:\drive having 98SE with

Fat32
and d:\drive having XP Pro. with NTFS. I have not bothered with extra
partitions but it is something that I may end up doing down the line.

Also,
I have only a little knowledge of the registry and my skills mainly lie in
trying to get PC's clean from baddies. (aka spyware, viruses, malware,
adware, etc. -- my word for all of it) It is kinda nice that 98SE does

* yes, mine was configured the same, I formatted 3 partition though, 98se
automatically goes to C:\ and was installed first, D:\was my partition for

My plan may be to purchase 2000-Pro, I like it and it's a step up from
98-se.

Also, if you are a big artist, music fan or computer graphic designer then

an

I

more stability than Windows but I have not used it. Remember that to have
the largest software library at our disposal then Windows is the way to

go.
I hope someone more knowledgeable than myself can help you fix your

computer.
BTW, can you possibly return your computer and get a brand new one. I

think
that Dell computers are fairly cheap or you could always build your system
from the ground up. Perhaps the refurbished parts are somewhat defective.

I
actually have never used a refurbished computer.

No, Dan, I built my P-3 while taking A+ certification, all new parts!! After
2 yrs.I had problems. A tech at Boeing & old friend rebuilt it for me, all
new, MB, P-4 cpu, etc..... I bought everything new, CD-RW, DVD, etc....
Maxtor HD not new, Iomega not new and modem is old, new floppy drive
though!!

I particularly don't like working inside the box, the MB can be hard to
place in the case. I TB-SHT Windows for myself and others. I'm strong on
partitioning, formatting & installing Windows and devices. I can usually
get a system up, even if it means taking it down and doing a clean install.
A+ is not my calling, however I require a working puter!!

I'm not a geek or Windows guru, I just do the above well!!

** Brian, in 2 wks. I have gotten it several times since new install, have
checked
OE @ 0028:C027F8AB VXD VMM06

You have also provided a bit more info in your response to Dan, although
more would be nice.

Whenever doing a search on any error message, try what becomes available.
If the text explaining the problem matches ever oh so close, try the
resolution. Near to 99% of the time, anything after the first 4 digits will
not repeat on the next occurrence, ex: 0028:xxxxxxxx to 0028:xxxxxxxpx. Also
many articles that mention an OS can/may still apply to another OS.

** Like I mentioned, I went to Jim Elshelman's page on OE"s... I think it's
one of the best!!
nothing matched, so I concentrated on VMM06, nothing related to
booting/starting Windows, actually this appears to be an error associated
w/W-95.

The first and foremost Q that comes into play is when the problem first
began. What was the last action performed?

** Like I mentioned in my original post, when I start/boot Windows, not
everytime.

You mention upgrading, more like rebuilding your system and I'm not speaking
of the OS.

Is your processor faster than 2.GHz? There is an issue with NDIS and faster
processors.
** It's 2.GHz
How much RAM have you installed? If more than 512MB, you need to either
lower the RAM, set a MaxFileCache and/or MaxPhysPage or install XP.
** Yes, I know, 512 installed, new, 6 mos. old, Fat 32, didn't install W-XP,
not dual booting.

Have you had a good peek in Device Manager to make sure there are no
conflicts?

** No Brian, I would reinstall device drivers, etc... everything cool in
D/M.

Have a read thru some of these to see if the help:
http://tinyurl.com/3vh2k

No, thank-you I will. Like I explained to Dan in the post I returned to him.
I built the puter while taking A+ certification, and it was rebuilt, all
new, except HD, modem, and Iomega zip.

I don't like working in the case, I'm fairly savy at partitioning,
formatting, clean install of Windows and installing devices..

Thank you, Star

Ahhhh..... Glee, you have a *excellent* memory, more than 6 mos. ago. You
had a Jetway MB at your work that had leaky capacitors. I remember, "asking
you the manuf." And, I responded, "that was my board too"!!

No, I was going to put the same board, I went on the Internet and was going
to buy one. My friend talked me into buying a Asus MB. I was glad I did!!
You told me another Jetway was put in the puter at your work and it failed
almost immediately!!

It's Asus P4SGX-MX, I would be really sick.... leaky capacitors again!!

Of course, I just may need to look. I took it down to wks. ago, I couldn't
get into it period, Windows wouldn't load.
I couldn't get into safe mode, the immediate ck. on screen, appeared good,
himen ck. etc.... it went to a blank screen w/flashing cursur over & over.
I went to dos and did scanreg /restore, Windows would restore a good
registry but would not load. After days of this, and I lost data, I
partitioned 2 drives and did a clean install of Windows.

Thank you, I took A+ and I still struggle to maintain my puter, I'm really
on a bummer!! I built my P-3 system and put the Jetway MB in the case,
putting the MB in was the hardest task!!

One thing to consider (though it will require you to open the case and

make a very
close inspection) is that the new mobo's capacitors may have also started
leaking/bulging. As you got a replacement Jetway mobo, it is quite

possible that
you got another board with defective capacitors, if it was an exact

replacement.
Check the mobo at the base of the capacitors, for signs of

leakage.....brown
deposits at the base of the capacitors.

Skipper,
VXD, they are virtual drivers, all the VMM's have numbers and that's a big
clue. Sometimes, just re-installing the associated VXD driver/device will
fix or like one time I had to re-install dial-up networking from my install
CD. I would try to connect w/modem and crash to an OE..... VXD.......
VMM...... and, it fixed my problem.

I'm going to search more on the web, and look at the MB carefully for
leaking/failing capacitors.

Thank you, Star

I had this problem a few years ago, and if I remember properly, there are

a
few vxds that comprise VMM. (example configmg.vxd for one). Now it gets
really fuzzy...I think I had extract like five or six vxds to
Windows\System\VMM32...and these a
configmg.vxd
ntkern.vxd
vdd.vxd
vdmad.vxd
vflatd.vxd
vmouse.vxd
(I also found these other files the IFSMGR.VXD, IOS.VXD, MRCI2.VXD and
QEMMFIX.VXD.

So, Star is your plan to format now and go with a dual-boot 98SE/XP Pro.
This is the way my system is configured with c:\drive having 98SE with Fat32
and d:\drive having XP Pro. with NTFS. I have not bothered with extra
partitions but it is something that I may end up doing down the line. Also,
I have only a little knowledge of the registry and my skills mainly lie in
trying to get PC's clean from baddies. (aka spyware, viruses, malware,
adware, etc. -- my word for all of it) It is kinda nice that 98SE does not
even know that XP exists and I am currently working to get my 98SE install
nice and ready and then I plan to work more on getting XP Pro. configured
properly. Apple computers are okay but I hate using a one-button mouse.
Also, if you are a big artist, music fan or computer graphic designer then an
Apple may be best for you but if you are an all-around computer user then I
suggest Windows. Finally, there is even Linux to consider which I hear has
more stability than Windows but I have not used it. Remember that to have
the largest software library at our disposal then Windows is the way to go.
I hope someone more knowledgeable than myself can help you fix your computer.
BTW, can you possibly return your computer and get a brand new one. I think
that Dell computers are fairly cheap or you could always build your system
from the ground up. Perhaps the refurbished parts are somewhat defective. I
actually have never used a refurbished computer.

I'm sorry Star, but you're missing a few of the points here, so I will
re-iterate hopefully in a way that is easily followed. I will also veer away
from inline to avoid confusion. Please read all very carefully to avoid
confusion and misunderstanding when responding.

This is still an incomplete error message and not even near exact.
quote
OE @ 0028:C027F8AB VXD VMM06
/quote

Another correction would be "OE" (ohE) which is actually 0E (zeroE)
There is also more to the error message before @, and the VXD VMM06 should
be shown as VXD VMM (06). **Note the brackets**

** Ok Brian 0E, I stand corrected, 06 is 06 w or w/o brackets. As for the
text between 0E and @ it's basically unchanged, the same for all 0E's

Let me clarify this statement/question which I asked and you responded, with
a statement:
quote
My S&Q: The first and foremost Q that comes into play is when the problem
first began. What was the last action performed?
Your response: Like I mentioned in my original post, when I start/boot
Windows, not everytime.
/quote

The conclusion I arrive at in this time and moment is that this has been an
issue since the rebuild 6 mos prior to today.
You state that you self built the system back yonder and 6 mos ago a friend
rebuilt it.

If this has been ongoing since the rebuild, you should take a serious look
into bad RAM modules if you are positive there are none-whatsoever other
hardware device conflicts/driver issues.

** No, *not* since the rebuild, only the last 2 wks.
I wrote this in my orig. post.
I have a new install of Windows... two wks. old.
The system has not been stable. I'm backing up everyday.

I'm going to look at the MB, possibly leaking capacitors again, I feel
confident RAM is good. The machine has NO h/w conflicts, DxDiag tells me
all is well and the D/M tells me I have no problems, I carefully looked at
each device. I did this before I posted to the group.

** Brian, in 2 wks. I have gotten it several times since new install, have
checked
OE @ 0028:C027F8AB VXD VMM06

You have also provided a bit more info in your response to Dan, although
more would be nice.

Whenever doing a search on any error message, try what becomes available.
If the text explaining the problem matches ever oh so close, try the
resolution. Near to 99% of the time, anything after the first 4 digits

will
not repeat on the next occurrence, ex: 0028:xxxxxxxx to 0028:xxxxxxxpx.

Also
many articles that mention an OS can/may still apply to another OS.

** Like I mentioned, I went to Jim Elshelman's page on OE"s... I think

it's
one of the best!!
nothing matched, so I concentrated on VMM06, nothing related to
booting/starting Windows, actually this appears to be an error associated
w/W-95.

The first and foremost Q that comes into play is when the problem first
began. What was the last action performed?

** Like I mentioned in my original post, when I start/boot Windows, not
everytime.

You mention upgrading, more like rebuilding your system and I'm not

speaking
of the OS.

Is your processor faster than 2.GHz? There is an issue with NDIS and

faster
processors.
** It's 2.GHz
How much RAM have you installed? If more than 512MB, you need to either
lower the RAM, set a MaxFileCache and/or MaxPhysPage or install XP.
** Yes, I know, 512 installed, new, 6 mos. old, Fat 32, didn't install

W-XP,
not dual booting.

Like I explained to Dan in the post I returned to

him.
I built the puter while taking A+ certification, and it was rebuilt, all
new, except HD, modem, and Iomega zip.

I don't like working in the case, I'm fairly savy at partitioning,
formatting, clean install of Windows and installing devices..

Thank you, Star
