Default Remove banner on start-up

I am cleaning up an older hard drive that has Win 98SE. At one time the
computer was used to access a corporate network. On start-up a warning banner
about use of corporat networks comes up first. I have to go past this warning
before I can log onto Windows Networking. How do I remove the warning banner
from the boot-up sequence?

Your first question is whether this comes before
Windows loads (if so probably in AUTOEXEC.BAT,
less likely CONFIG.SYS) or after you see the
background for the Windows Desktop.
1. If early, edit AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS
to see whether you can identify the banner's filename.
2. If late, have a look via / start / run /MSCONFIG.EXE
or (the quick and dirty method) browse to folder
c:\windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. You may
see a likely banner command in either.
3. When changing things, REName files rather than
removing them. A prefix x does it e.g. xFILENAME.
You can REName even Windows-protected files
from a DOS prompt. If you make any errors it is
thus easy to relocate the renamed file and change it
back the way it was.

Default Remove banner on start-up

First pick one of the following to identify what loads at boot, as shown
at...
"START button, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab", or at
"START button, Run, MSInfo32, Startup Programs"

Next, check whether there is an option in it's menus to disable it from
starting up. If you really want to rid yourself of it on a more
permanent basis, then look for it in "Control Panel, Add/Remove
Programs". However, it isn't often easy to know what is what in there.
One of these URL's may say. If none of the those options are
appropriate, it can be disabled using MSConfig, & its Registry value may
be deleted.

Check for and delete, if found, the following two keys in the Registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\Winlogon\LegalNoticeCaption
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\Winlogon\LegalNoticeText

Thanks for you response. I used MSConfig, startup tab and disabled everything
but the systray and one item named Pointer. Upon restart the banner was still
there.

That worked. Thanks for your help. I did find it under Windows rather than
WindowsNT.

Start regedit, expand and highlight the following key and look in the right window
for "LegalNoticeText" and "LegalNoticeCaption". If you find them, delete them.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Winlogon

You are welcome. I see Harper came up with it, or close enough for you.
Very good.
