Default networking 98 virtual machine with windows vista.

I have windows 98 installed in a virtual machine running on windows
vista. I have simple file sharing enabled on windows vista and I have
the option requiring passwords turned off. My problem is when I am in
the 98 machine trying to access a shared folder on the vista machine.
I can access and browse the shared folder, until I select an exe file.
As soon as I single click on or use the directional keys to highllight
any exe file, the window freezes for several minutes. I can select or
open other file types just fine.
If I try to execute the exe file then after several minutes of waiting
I get an error message that the file is not a valid win32 application.
I can copy the same files over to an xp machine and run them from the
98 machine just fine.
Ive tried reinstalling windows 98 on virtual pc 2007 and vmware 5.5.
Ive tried 2 different windows 98 disks.

are there any tricks to get windows 98 and vista to share fileswith
each other?

Microsoft doesn't support File and Printer Sharing between Vista and
98. That capability wasn't part of Vista's design, coding, or testing.

I've been trying to make Vista/98 sharing work for months, and I've
discussed it with people inside and outside of Microsoft. To the best
of my knowledge, no one has found a way to make it work reliably.

I wish that I had a better answer for you. :-(
