Can we use Win98SE Explorer in Win2K?
One of the more annoying problems in Win2K is Explorer (which gets
worse for me with XP), so I copied my Windows Explorer from Win98SE to try it out here at work. I got an error (naturally, in hindsight). Is there any way to get Win98SE's to work in 2K, by any chance? I'm currently using a freeware Explorer replacement that I'm pleased enough with but nothing beats Win98SE's for me and it would be neat to make it work, if possible. tx |

A bit of free advise:
Unless you were authorized to install it on the work computer, you can now be fired, and sued.. These issues were finalized during the intitial Microsoft Windows 3.1, 3.11 era. -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com/ BLOG http://peoplescounsel.spaces.live.com/ Public Notice or the "real world" "Most people, sometime in their lives, stumble across truth. They are two completely different operating systems. The odds that
Explorer would work are one in a million. wrote: One of the more annoying problems in Win2K is Explorer (which gets worse for me with XP), so I copied my Windows Explorer from Win98SE to try it out here at work. Just curious... What is it about the 2K Explorer that is so different from
98's? I mean, I can make XP's Explorer look and function almost exactly like 98's. 2K's can't be all that different. Is it that 2K and XP put My Documents at the top of the folder tree? Or are you complaining about the eye candy and "helper" panes that XP has by default. Those are all easily gotten rid of, you know. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User wrote in message ps.com... I find it irritating, particularly since I don't use My Documents very much
and the nature of my interaction with other people's machines doesn't usually involve personal files. But for most users it makes sense. In any case, it's quite easy to at least prevent the MD folder from being expanded when Explorer is opened, via Explorer shortcut properties. -- Gary S. All the more reason I need to stick with Win98SE. I need an operating
system that is NOT ... "set up for most users", (courtesy of Big Brother). I don't like Big Brother's decision's on a LOT of things! I want to make my own, my way, thank you very much. And evidently you can't do that so much anymore (with the newer op systems). Gary S. Did you miss the part where I mentioned how easy it is to tweak newer
versions of Explorer to match almost exactly the look and feel of 98's? And with a lot more useful features available on demand, should you choose. And I beg to differ. Even 98's default Explorer settings are almost without exception the *wrong* settings. Same goes for a lot of Microsoft's stuff, and most other applications, major or minor, as well. IMO, Microsoft has actually done a superb job of maintaining continuity in its user interfaces over time. It's just that you've had years to tweak what you have, and you like it the way it is. That's cool, but your argument simply isn't based upon any objective reality that I can see. Is configuring a new machine really that scary? Personally, I get a kick out of doing it, especially since I've lost a lot of my memory and have to rediscover all the various places that need tweaking almost every time I go into a new system. -- Gary S.
