Doug Knox Doesn't fix my Image Preview
I am having the same problem as others with the image preview in my Windows
98 Explorer not working, and I tried Doug Knox's fix, but it unfortunately, didn't work. Does anyone have any other ideas, other than going into the registry and following the instructions in a Knowledge Base article I found? And, speaking of the registry, if I do go in there and mess something up, the way I can restore things back to normal is by going to C:\scanreg\restore and choosing a registry from a day or two back, right? -- Thx! Jon,
There is nothing called "C:\scanreg\restore". To restore a previous Registry, boot to DOS and issue the command: scanreg /restore Perhaps you could supply details of what the KB says and the differences with Doug's fix? (Before you mess with the Registry) ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/index.html In microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion, Jon wrote: I am having the same problem as others with the image preview in my Windows 98 Explorer not working, and I tried Doug Knox's fix, but it unfortunately, didn't work. Well, here is how to recover an older Registry...
http://support.microsoft.com/default...87&Product=w98 Description of the Windows Registry Checker Tool (Scanreg.exe) (183887) - When you start your computer successfully, the Windows Registry Checker tool (Scanreg.exe) creates a backup of system files and registry configuration information (including user account information, protocol bindings, software program settings, and... Boot to DOS (hold Ctrl as you boot for the Startup Menu, & select "Command Prompt Only"), and Enter SCANREG /Restore It will offer five, one for each of the last five separate days you booted successfully. Start with the one of the day the problem began, as these backups of the entire Registry (& System.ini & Win.ini) are done at boot, not at shut down. CAVEAT: A /Restore restores settings only. If there was a file change (other than to System.ini & Win.ini), those cannot be undone this way. That could be a problem, especially if there was a hardware change or large un/in-stall since the backup was made. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Jon" wrote in message ... | I am having the same problem as others with the image preview in my Windows | 98 Explorer not working, and I tried Doug Knox's fix, but it unfortunately, | didn't work. | | Does anyone have any other ideas, other than going into the registry and | following the instructions in a Knowledge Base article I found? | | And, speaking of the registry, if I do go in there and mess something up, | the way I can restore things back to normal is by going to C:\scanreg\restore | and choosing a registry from a day or two back, right? | -- | Thx! | | Jon |
