Default can't open audio device

i try to play music in my realplayer but get the following
message "cannot not open the audio device. another
application may be using it."
also, in device manager i have an exclamation mark on"PCI
IDE controller.
also, i don't have access to audio or MIDI in multimedia
properties

Try uninstalling and then re-installing your sound card drivers.

i have tried uninstall and reinstall. the first time just
the software, and then i physically removed sound card,
powered up, shut down and reinstalled sound card, no use.

What else is running at the time that might use a sound device?

I do not use real player because in my experience it is a very poorly
written program that often causes errors of the type you describe, for no
particular reason. Is there alternative software that you can use which
might not have this problem?

thanx jeff! nothing else seems to be running, i have even used
cont/alt/delete to stop all programs(except systray and explorer) with no
effect, but i am interested in new software or a new player, any thoughts?
