Yesterday, I went to type a letter and discovered that Works 2000 is no
longer in existance on my computer. No way to download (believe me, I've
tried it). And rebooting my computer means I loose everything else (been
there, done that). Everything says to use disk to reinstall, but Works
2000 (along with Windoww ME) was preinstalled. I can't even look at all
documents. Short of buying an upgrade, and I'm on a very fixed income, any
suggestions?

If Works came preinstalled on the system you should be able to find it on
the CD's that you received with the computer and reinstall it from those.

Joan,
I tried that. But it isn't on them. I have an E-Machine that I purchased
in April of 2000.

Rebooting your PC will lost nothing except for any unsaved data. I suspect
you mean reinstalling.

If your PC came with Works pre-installed (it is not part of Win Me) then
you should also have received a copy on disk, alternatively Works is
included on the recovery media supplied with the PC.

Whilst it might not help you find Works you might also want to ask
yourself how it is that you have lost Works? It won't have spontaneously
uninstalled itself. Did you perhaps mistakenly uninstall it using
Add/Remove Programs?

I have an E-Machine that I purchased in April of 2000.

Which means that your PC did not come with Win Me pre-installed as Win Me
did not go RTM until 19 June 2000 (the files are however dated 6 June
2000) and was not available on new PCs until at least August 2000.

I might have, as I've had to reboot recently and was clearing out some programs I didn't need (like Eudora and Microsoft Money). I checked the Restore CD and couldn't find works on it anywhere.

When I bought my WinME machine, Works was on a totally separate CD,
along with a number of programs by Microsoft, IIRC. Did you not get
anything besides a restore CD??

If not, then I suppose you could try eBay or some smaller computer store
that might have an old copy of it. Or ask around and see if anyone
happens to have it. Do you even know what version it was??

Thanks for all of the help.
Heather, when I bought my e-machine, it came only with the restore CD.
I talked to a friend last night and he's coming down from Atlanta (he is a
computer whiz), I live south of there, next weekend, and is bringing me his
copy of Works 2006. Will it be compatible with ME? And will it convert my
Works 2000 docs to it? I've got a lot of background materials for different
things in Works 2000 and there is no way I could ever recreate them.
I checked the REBOOT CD last night, and there is no way to simply reinstall
just the Works off it. I'd have to do a complete REBOOT, using the CD (which
I've had to do twice--when it hung up for some reason). And I hate to do
that simply for one little problem.
Do you think the Works 2006 will work?

Kristi asked :-

Do you think the Works 2006 will work?

See :-
"Works Suite 2006 - System Requirements"
http://www.microsoft.com/products/wo...s.aspx?pid=001
which does confirm that it will run in WinMe, but you must also confirm your
PC's hardware is adequate. Depending on that outcome, you *may* still be
'forced' to re-install it from your REBOOT CD.

Your 'computer whiz' friend might even be able to sort out the "complete
REBOOT, using the CD (which you've had to do twice--when it hung up for some
reason)" issue, for you - which still might be preferable than trying to
install Works Suite 2006.

Referring back to Mike M's unanswered earlier point - "you might also want
to ask yourself how it is that you have lost Works? It won't have
spontaneously uninstalled itself. Did you perhaps mistakenly uninstall it
using
Add/Remove Programs?

If your Works folders and files are still on your PC, then it might even
still be 'fixable'.

Good luck

Mart

I have absolutely no idea. And when you say *reboot*, do you mean
*reinstall*?? Two entirely different actions.

Why not buy a way better word processing program than Works. If you
know someone who is either a student, nurse, teacher or over 65, you can
get them to buy you the *academic version* of WordPerfect or MS Word.
Peanuts compared to the usual price.

I never used Works......ever. I am one of those oddball Wordperfect
users who doesn't like MS Word either. But.....as I said before, it is
not on your install CD....I have it on a separate one for MS Works.
When I bought my WinME, it included about 10 different CD's for
programs. You got ripped off.

Good luck.....Heather
