Default Hard Drive

Hi,

I have an HP computer running with a Pentium III at 997MHz and 1gig of Ram.
The 40gig hard drive has gone south. The system said that the Master Boot
Track or the FAT has some type of problem, NOT sure which one is the problem.
I changed the drive out with a 14gig from another machine and this drive is
working OK.

My ??s a

1. How do I fix the FAT or Boot problems?
2. Can I reinstall the drive as the second hard drive ie. Drive D?
3. Is their some Freeware Software to help recover some of the files from
the bad drive?

Thanks,

Russ

Russ,

1. Take a look at :- "FDISK /MBR rewrites the Master Boot Record" at :-
http://support.microsoft.com/default...kb;en-us;69013
And be sure to read the Warnings - You attempt this at your own risk!!
If your data is important, you should check 2. and 3. first.

2. Yes - but also see 3.

3. Assuming that you can 'see' the drive in 2. (above) AND haven't
re-formatted it AND it isn't badly damaged, then you may be able to recover
your files using Windows Explorer and copy them to your C: drive (or
elsewhere)
