Default Display Problem

My daughters computer was working fine with the Nvidia GE Force display
adapter then all of sudden the screen has become all garbled no matter what I
do. Sometimes it won't even reboot. I have tried changing the graphics
acceleration, refresh rate everything I can think of. The settings appear to
be stuck in 16 colors and 680x400. Any suggestions?

Default Display Problem

Tried reinstalling the card? If that doesn't work, I have to suggest the
possibility that the card is simply "broken". But if you really want to be
sure, go into Safe Mode, then into Device Manager, and remove the video card
there. Reboot and perhaps the card will reinstall itself, perhaps it won't.
You'll probably get messages telling you that your video is having problems
and that you need to reinstall the card. Don't try to install it there, just
Cancel whatever you run into and get yourself to the Desktop. Then reinstall
the video adapter's software/drivers.

Note that the above procedure is often fraught with "issues". We can only
deal with them as they come up. But it is really necessary to first
reinstall the entire shebang, preferably after removing it in Safe Mode
Device Manager, before we can say for certain that the card itself is
perhaps bad. If you get to the point of having reinstalled the
software/drivers with no improvement, it's time to try a different card.
There *may* be other issues involving the motherboard to consider if a
different card produces similar errors.

Default Display Problem

Restore the registry from the day before the problem occurred. Here's my
standard blurb:

If this problem is less than five days old, restore a copy of the registry
that predates the onset of the problem and see if that helps. The five-day
limit assumes that the computer is booted every day. If it is not booted
every day, you may have an old enough registry backup that you can use even
though more than five days have elapsed. Note that any registry changes
made after the date of the restored registry will be lost.

Ways of restoring the W98 registry include:

On the Start Menu, select Shut Down and Restart in MSDOS Mode. At the
Windows prompt, type: scanreg /restore and hit enter.

Boot to the boot menu by holding down either the ctrl or F8 key after the
ram count occurs on the boot screen. Select Command Prompt Only and at the
C: prompt, type: scanreg /restore and hit enter.

Boot with the W98 start up floppy disk--CDRom support doesn't matter. At
the A: prompt, type: C: and hit enter. At the C: prompt, type: CD
Windows\Command and hit enter. At the Command prompt, type: scanreg
/restore and hit enter.

Once the registry restore screen appears, select the date of the registry
that you wish to restore by highlighting it and then click enter. If you
see a registry named: Rbbad.cab, that is a copy of the registry that has
already been replaced.

I thought of that but guessed that it's been more than five days. Wonder
which of us will be right, g.
