Default HDD replaced - cannot install big programs

Hi,
after replacing original 20 GB HDD (4200rpm ATA-5) by a new 40 GB drive
(ATA-6 interface) Windows Me crashes on disk I/Os when larger files are to be
copied. This prevents ANY installation of major SW. (Smaller packages do
work, it happens when 120MB files are involved). Win Me installation itself
(without appls) works fine from original system restore CDs, but not when
wanting to restore complete with appls. I wouldn't mind upgrading to XP, but
even this procedure dies while copying the I386 folder. WHO CAN HELP ME OUT
OF THIS STALEMATE PLEASE?

Using a Pentium III with 800 MHZ processor on a Packard Bell 'Le DIV@ II'
integrated desktop (laptop technology) with 256 MB RAM . No support from HW
manufacturer, because I purchased oct 2001. However sticker says Designed for
Win 2000 professional and 20GB HDD was originally supported.

Problem resolved, actually it wasn't a HDD support issue.
The problem was memory incompatibility, as I upgraded it simultaneously with
the new disk by additional 128 MB RAM, which was a PC133 SDRAM instead of
PC100.
Just for the records...
