HD upgrade. Please advise.
Computer: etower 366c
Board: TriGem Computer, Inc. Delhi3 1.00 250 megahertz Cyrix MII 256 Megabytes Installed Memory Bus Clock: 66 megahertz BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 0631 04/26/99 Windows 98 (build 4.10.1998) OEM Plextor CD-R PX-W8432T [CD-ROM drive] Highspeed USB 2.0 Hub Hard Drive 3.19 GB 560 MB free I need more storage. I installed USB 2.0 Hub planning to purchase an external drive but discovered Win98 does not support external drives. The best I've been able to determine my mo bo and bios will support a 40gb drive. Now I'm considering a Western Digital eide, 7200 rpm, 8mb buffer drive. The price looks good, any (all) suggestions greatly appreciated. TIA Bill Cole |

Go down to Best Buy if there is one where you live.
Find a "Seagate" 120gig HD. It has a HD wizard program CD with it. Follow the instructions on initial install of the drive. You will be able to copy, intact, your OS and other stuff with the disk wizard to the new drive. You were going to spend money on exteral drive just spend it on a bigger master HD. With 120gig. You will probly never need any more if you are functioning, now, on a 3gig.drive. The disk wizard will show you how to partition the new drive. I have 8 on mine. C: to J:. my mo bo and bios will support a 40gb drive. Yes if you just leave a large drive unpartitioned It will only see 40gigs.as mine does. But.. it will see multiple 40 gig partitions. That's where the disk wizard is helpful. There are other ways of doing all this in dos or using BootitNG or the like which is still in dos. In Dos... You never know what you really did to the drive until you reboot to OS. But Disk Wizard does it while you are running your Windows from desktop. You can see what you are doing at the same time your doing it. Once you do the partitioning and transfer of your data to the new drive. You will need to turn off machine and reset the jumpers where you new HD is master. And ,if you want to, slave your old drive. I've done this on 3 ,Win98SE, PCs that were running with small HDs. And they are singing right along. Hope this is of some help? "Bill C" wrote: Computer: etower 366c Board: TriGem Computer, Inc. Just remember that there is a 137GB limit in Windows 98 that can be overcome,
but only with the correct conditions in place. Hi,
I am in process of putting in a new Hard Drive. The Drive (13G) is over 8 years old. Still kicking, but I don't want to chance. When looking for drive I found one on sale at best buy. I did get it, but according to box I need windows se to use the s/w to copy the old drive. So, I went and got Ghost. Have not done, yet. But, what is risk that when the vendor says, needs win98se, that the program is just going to not work? Thanks. Jim "Eric" wrote in message ...
