Default Windows 98 comp not starting up

I have a Gateway comp and when I start it up it stops on a black screen that
says Device driver not found: 'CD1'.
No vald CDROM device drivers selected
C:\
What should I do. Does anyone know how to get it started back up.

Thank You

Have you changed the boot device sequence in the BIOS? Is there a floppy
start up disk in the floppy drive? Assuming the answers are no, can you
start in safe mode (tap the Ctrl key during boot process to get to the start
up menu)? If so, rename the autoexec.bat and config.sys files by changing
their extension to: .old

Then reboot and see if it starts in normal mode.

Try starting the computer in Safe mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly
during bootup. If that works, rename the "c:\autoexec.bat" and
"c:\config.sys" files, then restart normally.

When I try restarting the comp in safe mode it comes to a black screen with
a 6 choices. 1. Normal 2. Logged (\Bootlog.txt) 3. Safe Mode 4. Step-bystep-
confirmation 5. Command prompt only and 6 Saf mode command prompt only. when
enter 3 on the bottom it says Windows is bypassing startup files. It then
says C:\ and there I can type something to start it up. What would I type.

Start Notepad on the computer you are using now, copy and paste the
following text to it and save it to a floppy as "a:\winboot.ini". Start the
problem computer, insert the floppy, type
"c:\windows\command\move a:\winboot.ini c:"
and press "Enter". Then remove the floppy and restart.

[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C

[Options]
BootGUI=1
;end

Try typing "dir /s c:\win.com" at the "C:\" prompt. If the file exists, please
repost with the directory in which it is located. If it is missing, you may have to
reinstall Windows.
