Default Fire Wall Recommendation

Hello Everyone,

My system has Windows 98 and I use Zone Alarm 4.5. I was told on Zone
Alarms Support Forum that it would not be a good idea to upgrade to Zone
Alarm 5.x on a Win 98 system. I do not want to continue using an obsolete
Fire Wall forever. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good, up to date,
freeware, Fire Wall that will work with Windows 98 ?

I Thank You Kindly for any thoughts and input,

Wayne R. Russ

Hi,
What is obsolete about your version? Is it no longer blocking hackers?
I'm using an older version than you are and I'm as invisible as anyone
with a "newer" version. Test it at Shields Up! http:///www.grc.com

I have heard some good reports about Kerio Personal Firewall, though I
don't have a personal experience to back that up. I tried it on one
system, but something on it just didn't get along with it,not that I'm
blaming Kerio-- who knows what app. wasn't playing nice with it.

I totally agree with this. ZoneAlarm v5.x is not to be touched with
*anyone's* long pole. ZoneLabs don't seem to be in much of a hurry to fix
the problems with it, either.

I'm using one of the v4.5 variants, and because I had the same concerns as
you, I also went to Shields Up!. Result? It says my system is as tight as an
aardvark's arse! So there's no cause for concern.

Hi Wayne,
I second mm's recommendations. I too use an older version of ZA, and
although my machine does not meet ZA's minimum system requirements, it works
well.
Kerio *does* come highly recommended, and is supposed to use less resources

I'm using an *ancient* version of ZA Pro, and it's still works great. Still
stealthed to the max, according to all the tests I've done. How ancient? Try
an upper 2.x.xxx version. I could install a newer one as I have paid for ZA
pro, but it ain't broken, and I haven't the need for many of the bells and
whistles. Additionally, I avoid loose security settings.

BTW, some might argue that W98 is "obsolete", but you're still using it with
satisfaction aren't you?

Just my 2 ¢ worth.

Thank You to Everyone for your replies,

It appears that I shouldn't be as worried as I thought. You have put my
mind at ease. I did go to Shields Up as well and my system seems to have
passed very well. so I am in good shape.

Again Thank You So Very Much,

Wayne R. Russ

Right on, LuckyStrike! I downgraded to the 4.0.146.129 version of
ZoneAlarm Pro when the 4.5xxxxxx started locking up and crashing my
W98. 98 is happy with the 4.0 version and so am I. The bells and
whistles of later versions are unnecessary and use up too many
resources. I hope Win98 lives forever!

Heh! Yeah... I'm with you on that. Regarding some features that software
authors make, such as adding pop-up blockers to firewalls for an example,
kind of make me wonder. It would be best (IMO) to have compact and specific
purpose programs which focus on their primary function; avoid bloat and
operate simply (faster). Just my 3 cents.

Where do you find an older version of ZoneAlarm please? Their web site
only has a version 5 on it.

Thanks

Henry
