2 Hard drive and 2 windows setups
I have a 250 gig hard drive with windows xp in it and then I have a 40 gig
hard drive with windows 98 in it. when I try to boot into the windows 98 I get the following msg: "Insufficient memory to initialize windows Quit one or more memory - resident programs or remove unneccsary utilities from your config.sys and autoexec.bat files and restart your sys. Press any key to continue. What must I do to get the windows 98 to boot? Windows xp will boot no problem there and I can remove the 40 gig and put it in another computer and it will boot up no problem but to boot up in my system it will not. I have unplug all of the stuff to my 250 gig and still no help? Can anybody help me? Thanks |

Thanks To run a dual-boot setup like you want Win98 must be installed first as it has to have the C:\ for it's boot drive. Xp on the other hand is happy to reside on any drive you care to install it. As I have found out recently, Win98 is not comfortable with drives over 137 Gigabytes. This sucks for me as I'm running a 200Gig with 98SE on C:\ and XP Pro on D:\ now G:\. How the f**k that happened I'm not sure but it still works. I have a second 80Gig drive that is now D:\ in both versions of Windoze and wish to remove it and get Unbutu Linux working again as a third boot choice. I have a drive F:\ that I can only access from XP. Not critical but many times find myself in 98 needing a file that is out of reach. If you can back-up your critical files I would suggest re-formatting the 250Gig and re-installing both Windoze starting with 98. Preferably 98SE. 80 Gigs would give you more than enough for 98, 80-137 as a common drive to access from both Windoze and the rest formatted for XP. I left everything as Fat32 as that's what I'm used to tho NTFS is supposed to best for XP. As an aside be careful which disk utilities you use in the various flavours of Windoze. Older Windoze utilities can thrash your XP install. Google is your friend. Just plug dual-boot in and you'll find tons of stuff relative to your needs. Hope this helps Later...... Is the 40GB drive the Primary Master drive? It needs to be.
