Disk partition
How can I change the hd partition size using Windows ME?
FDISK won't do it. Have a older computer with Windows ME...has 12 gig hd but only partitioned for 2 gig (?). Can't install WinXP, not enough disk space. Thanks. DA |

If only 2GB is available then it was partitioned without enabling large disk
support. Now afaik (its been a long time) you can't enable large disk support with FDISK without wiping it in the process. There is available in Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup | System Tools a FAT32 converter which I imagine is for that purpose (although maybe it only converts to FAT32 but doesn't actually enable large disk support? I only used it once, long ago.). However, if you go to Terabyte Unlimited's site you can download Boot It Next Generation (BING), the trial of which will go on a floppy or cd (or run from the hd iirc) and without a shadow of a doubt you'll be able to do it with that. The trial isn't crippled in any way. Shane DA wrote: How can I change the hd partition size using Windows ME? FDISK won't do it. Neither Win Me now XP have tools that allow you to readily change the size
of a partition without losing its contents. This requires the use of third party tools such as BootIt NG or Partition Magic. If you are happy to lose the contents of your partitions then use fdisk to remove them. XP will then allow you to create a partition of your preferred size using the free space on the drive at the start of the XP installation. -- Mike Maltby DA wrote: How can I change the hd partition size using Windows ME? Incidentally you should be able to do it with the XP cd. Though one wonders
if a machine with a 12GB disk will have enough processing or memory power to make XP worth running. Just a thought. DA wrote: How can I change the hd partition size using Windows ME? As mentioned in my reply vbg Though one wonders if a machine with a 12GB disk will have enough processing or memory power to make XP worth running. Just a thought. My thinking also. I suspect that box is going to be very pushed on processor power, memory and storage and that it may not be worth installing XP. -- Mike Maltby Shane wrote: Incidentally you should be able to do it with the XP cd.
