DOS version of DEFRAG
Good evening,
It's my understanding that W98 (prolly 95 too??) does not have a DOS version of DEFRAG, because a DOS based version will destroy Long File Names (and maybe other consequences?). I've searched the Knowledge Base for any kind of documentation, but came up empty-handed. Anyone out there have any info./links I can look at regarding this? TIA, -- Curt--and NOT the MVP Curt Christianson (I wish!) W98 Support & Discussion: http://dundats.proboards27.com/index.cgi Windows How-tos and and Freewa http://mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/ Windows Help & Discussion: http://forum.aumha.org/ --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Version: 6.0.699 / Virus Database: 456 - Release Date: 6/5/04 |

Hi Gary,
Thanks for the leads. I'll check them out. I scoured the KB, and found nada. Funny thing is I *never* thought of using Google. Funny, because I *always* go to Google first. looking rather sheepish right now. -- Curt--and NOT the MVP Curt Christianson (I wish!) The MSKB ages out a lot of stuff over time. I wish it wasn't so, but it is.

Hi Hugh,
snip Google sees all, eventually. snip Isn't that the truth. For some reason I thought MSKB would have the definitive answers on this subject--not so. Do a well thought out Google search, and I had more hits than I knew what to do with. Who woulda thunk... -- Curt--and NOT the MVP Curt Christianson (I wish!) Who woulda thunk... I'm 99.999% COAB certain that pre-LFN defrag would be Very Bad for an LFN-endowed OS, especially if it purges deleted entries and re-orders directory entries (e.g. subdirs first) as IMO it should. If defrag doesn't purge deleted dir entries, then it fails to fully clean up the performance impact of long fragmented dir chains that are bloated with since-deleted entries. Several contexts arise where that happens ITW: - MDM.EXE piollutes the Windows base dir with FFF... junk - Temp and TIF; 'nuff said - a virus that bloats root dir with stuff (can't recall the name) - Symantec products that spawn wads of 0-byte .INF files - other issues with SR in WinME -------------------- ----- ---- --- -- - - - - No, perfection is not an entrance requirement. We'll settle for integrity and humility -------------------- ----- ---- --- -- - - - - |
