I give up!

YOU ALMOST CERTAINLY CANNOT RUN ANY KIND OF WINDOWS 95, 98, 98SE, ME or NT
(maybe even 2000) ON THAT MACHINE! I can almost guarantee you that. You need
drivers and there are no such things. They've never been written.

William, the point is that there are no such drivers. You need them, but
they don't exist and never will. In other words, you can't do what you
want to do.

Okay, Gary, I'm resigned to taking a different path.
I'm installing Win 98 anew on an empty hard drive. I
am aware of the pitfalls involved with large RAM and
have cut back to 512MB. I understand that there may be
complications, in that my current MB runs at 3.1 GHz.
Are there patches or upgrades still available, for
Win 98, that I can download and use to upgrade my old
original issue Win98? Thank you.

But I do like to experiment with these things. Not very clear in my
query was a request, as to whether there is a link to specific downloads
to upgrade Win 98 from my original CD, to a 98 with all the warts from
its original issuance removed. I could not find such on the Microsoft
download site, even thought there are specific places to click for
Win 98 downloads. I have installed Win 98 in VPC and I would like to
remove the warts before I install ME, using my 98 to ME CD.

Play all you want, you aren't going to get anything decent out of 9x on that
hardware.

No, there is no "download' to upgrade Win98. To get from Win98 to Win98SE,
you have to buy an installation CD, just like you did with the ME Upgrade.
You can go to EBay to find one. Note that the OEM offering of Win98SE cannot
be used to Upgrade and must be clean installed.

Okay, then I just gor from basic 98 to my upgrade to ME. I
see no reason to do Win98SE; I'm comfortable with the ME
upgrade. I would like to add, if there are any, and post-
release fixes for ME, or maybe it was just perfect and needed
no corrections.

Again, you won't be able to run Windows ME on that hardware. Windows ME has
Updates just like any other Windows.

Sorry, Gary, something got lost on the way.
I have now installed 98 under VPC in this XP
machine and it's working fine. I have already upgraded
it, not to Win98SE, but to ME, and it is working fine.
What I'm seeking (and have asked Mike Maltby in the ME
newsgroup to help me with) are the upgrades for Win ME,
in such form that I can install them in the now running
ME system. I had no intention of going online from the
ME system, so what I need are download and Save links.

Sorry, I got going on a sidetrack. Totally missed the VPC reference.

Try Franc's link. Otherwise, I have a full set of Updates for Windows 98,
98SE and ME on CD. I ask $3. Email me at if
interested.
