Default Windows Explorer does not show contents

Windows Explorer will not show the contents of many
folders lately. Some do show, but most do not. Only a
little square at the top left of the section with a dot in
the middle. The details at the bottem give the totals of
the files, etc., but nothing shows.
If I know the specific file I am looking for I can find it
in search, but in the folders options, I have this problem.

I too am getting this problem. I tried your video adapter
fix Mart, unfortunately it had no effect.

I also had previously looked at the fix you singled out in
the knowledge base, it was also of no help. No matter how
you select to view your icons, there are no icons to view.

Thank you for the attempts Mart. At least you tried. I'm
not sure where to go now. I hate the thought of wiping the
drive, especially since all my info is still there, just
not accessible.

This does not do it. Nothing comes up in the right pane.
Changing from detailed view doesn't change anything either.

David & Jamie, have either of you tried a System Restore?

Also, two other things you could try before you resort to 'more drastic
measures'

1) Try Start | Run and type scanreg /fix in the box and OK

2) Repair Internet Explorer (if you have the option!) - Control Panel |
Add/remove programs, select IE and choose remove and you * should* be
offered a 'Repair' option.

BTW - this assumes that you are virus and parasite free!

Good luck guys

Hey guys

same problem here - unfortunately no solution.

I must admit I haven't tried all the options Mart suggests,
but I suppose they won't work anyway (didn't work with the
rest...).

I'll try a system restore...

hope it helps

Do you guys also have the problem only in explorer, for eg
not in the office programs?

THREE of you with the same problem in such a short space of time??

Coincidence? - Beginning to suspect a bit of a 'common issue' here guys!

Again - courtesy of Noel this time :-
You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mca...rt/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...CWShredder.exe
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

restoring doens't work - i get an errormessage, i suppose
it's related to the other problem.

i printed out noel's suggestion and will try later.

my problem started yesterday - when my computer, although
it is protected with mcafee (updated on startup etc)was
infected with the startpageDC-virus. the infected files
couldn't be deleted (runsystem32.dll and system.exe)
how did you get the problem?

good luck!

Wonder if it's related to another apparently common issue lately, that of
d-clicking folders bringing up the Open With dialogue.

My system restore also fails. First, it brings up a error
message saying it can't run scripts on the page. No matter
what you select at that point, restore doesn't even start.
If you then hit restore again, the restore window comes up
but is completely blank.

As for having got whatever this is, I think my AVG said I
had a JS/Psyme(?) virus, at which point I ran my anti
virus. While reading the posts here however, I just got a
Trojan Dialer message.

I am now going to dive into Mart's ideas on the stinger,
etc. to see if any of that helps, as well as updating and
running AVG yet again.
