Freezing Screen
Hi,
My computer screen has been freezing frequently, so that I have to shut down wrong. I bought a new mouse, but it's still doing it. Any ideas? Thank you, Vonnie |

One more question, please....When I try to run scandisk, it keeps restarting and telling me to close windows. How can I do that when windows comes up as soon as I turn the power on?
Thank you |

ScanDefrag will efficiently run these disk utilities.
The log will list all of the running programs and you can choose to close the unprotected ones by using Restrictive Mode. See the ReadMe for a more detailed explanation. http://home.earthlink.net/~bblanton2...efrag/main.htm or http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/index.html wrote: One more question, please....When I try to run scandisk, it keeps restarting and telling me to close windows. Thanks, but my screen is freezing every few minutes-not enough time to get anything done. I'm trying to get help from the manufacturer.
Thank you |

Dear John et al,
Funny thing but I'm getting it too and my CDROM isn't being recognized on reboot always. Am naturally wondering as no doubt you are, whether it has anything to do with the critical update of the other day. System restore to previous only helps very briefly. Sincerely, Mr. David Oltmann Thanks, but my screen is freezing every few minutes-not enough time to get anything done. I'm trying to get help from the manufacturer. Thank you |

Hi, David,
I wrote to HP and got a long list of corrective measures to try. None worked. I was online for 2 minutes and it just froze again. Even ctrl-alt-del doesn't work when that occurs. I'm stumped!!! Thank you for your reply. |

You first need to prove whether its a heat/hardware issue rather than a
WinMe issue. If heat related, then the weather *may* even be a factor - warmer g and the inside of the box may need a good clearout. (A lot of dust gets sucked into box due to the fan(s) and can reduce the cooling efficiency) Boot using your Windows Startup (floppy) Disk and select Option 1 (or let it continue to 'time-out' to) the DOS Help page. Scroll up and down the Help pages every now and again. Leave it running for several hours and see if it still freezes. If so, then it's a problem with your PC and not with WinMe. If not, then boot into Safe Mode (F8 or Ctrl keys at boot-up) and leave it running in that mode for a few hours and see if it freezes. Make a note of exactly what you were doing (which program you were using) when it freezes. Mart wrote in message ... Johnchabot,
Open Control Panel, Display, Settings, Advanced (I may have the steps wrong, but, you need to get to the Advanced Performance Settings tab). There you will see a Hardware Acceleration slider adjustment.....move this to one notch above "None". not to worry, you can move this back later. Reboot your machine and see if the freezing has stopped......if so, you need to look into getting new drivers for your video card and/or mouse. If new drivers fail to correct the problem, you may have to consider a new video card. I was having the same problem and it took me months to narrow down the problem to the video card. As mine was an older Voodoo Banshee 16M, there were no new drivers (there were a few 'home grown hacks' that did not work....made matters worse), so, the solution was to get a new card. With my limited power supply (250W), I settled on an inexpensive ATI Radeon 32M (the 64M would have required a new PS of greater wattage). This solved the 'freezing' problem for me, YMMV. Thank you both for your ideas. So far so good today, but I'll try both of your suggestions if it happens again.
