Default Max Memory and Win98se

What is the maximum amount of memory Win98se can have before I have to worry
about vache and other exotic things? How about ME? (we have both 98se and ME
machines in the office)
Tks.

Not true. You can have much more than 512MB (up to 3GB, IIRC), but you
have to make a tweak in system.ini. In system.ini, find the [vcache]
system, and add this line:

MaxFileCache=512000

I don't know about WinME, but then this is a Win98 newsgroup.

Not true.

It is. The question asked:

"What is the maximum amount of memory Win98se can have
before I have to worry about vache....."

512 MB is the amount of memory you can install
"before you have to worry about Vcache".

This cracked it for me. Thanks mate. bought 1Gb in two 512 blocks and could
only get one to work at a time. Both in and system failed.

Vcache already had

chunksize=514 so I left that in and inserted your recommended MFC=512000

and rebooted sucessfully for the first time with 1GB. (Been trying since Fri.)

DRR (dancing round the room) WOOHOO

Now I can get back into Counterstrike with a little more grunt. SOOO chuffed

Not sur if this went first Time so apologies if this is a repeat.
Wont happen again.
This Cracked it for me and many thanks.
Been trying since Fri to get my two 512 333 mem blocks to install together
with no success and duff gen from local help.

The Vcache had a chunksize=514 statement already in so I left it and added
your 512000 statement, rebooted and VABOOM off to the races we went.
First time rebooted with the full 1GB presented and a clean boot.
Now I can get back into Counterstrike with a bit more BASH.

I am so chuffed you would not believe.
Many Many thanks

FYI, the Chunksize line is not used and is ignored, so there is no point having it
there.

Glen, I read that the most memory that Microsoft suggests for 98SE is one
gigabyte. What is the most memory that you know that power users have been
able to configure their 98SE computers with before running into constant
problems and after making the necessary adjustments? Thanks in advance for
your reply.

I personally don't know anyone using more than 768MB RAM with Win98 installed. I
have worked on machines running XP, that have 1GB RAM, but have not personally run
into any with more than that regardless of the OS. I don't much care what power
users may have configured....there is a limit to what a system *needs*, depending on
the applications used. A machine running a number of OS's using VirtualPC may need
more than a Gig, but I would not use Win98 as the host OS on those systems.
Similarly, video editing requires a large amount of RAM and disk space, and begs for
WinXP. Outside of those uses, I have not seen a need for more than 512MB to 786MB
RAM. YMMV

I do know someone, Glen: at least it's me, who use 1GB of RAM with
Win98SE -- and a few participators of iXBT (one of the greatest Russian
computer Forum), who did that not without my help.

Unfortunately I need in a few programs, that can't run in WinXP (my main
system) because they work directly with COM ports. So when almost two
years ago I assembled my current computer (motherboard ASUS
P4C800-Deluxe which handles up to 10 of SATA+PATA drives, PIV-2.6GHz
with HT, 1GB of RAM, GeForce4-based video card) -- I had two choices:
either keep the other computer, or make the new one work with no
problems.

My point of honour was the second way -- and I did that (I limited
MaxFileCache already before installation: by creating the rudimentary
System.ini; and, of course, disable HT before boot in Win98): it turned
out that my main problem was in EMM386, that does not work properly with
512 MB of RAM and more; though when 512MB is installed -- it is only one
minor problem with EMM386: it eats up one megabyte from 512.

But in any case, WinXP works more stable, and when more than 256MB of
RAM is installed -- more fast than Win98. And of course, so many
benefits in NTFS (including the video editing, mentioned by you), which
can't be used with Win98...
