shadows on screen
I can't seem to find help anywhere as I can't seem
describe the most annoying problem. There are deep dark shadows everywhere there are words or bars on my screen, that go horizontally across the screen. I thought it might be my monitor, but switched with another and there is the same problem, so it must be somehow in the settings (?) Please help, it is driving me crazy. |

Could be the video card or maybe just the drivers.
Try booting using the WinMe Startup (floppy) disk and select the Help page. Although pretty basic coloured DOS screen, you might be able to see if there is a 'shadow'. If so, you have a faulty video card. If not, try booting into Safe Mode (Ctrl or F8 keys during boot-up) and see if the 'shadows' are there. Come back with the results and someone here should be able to help you further. Mart "jan" wrote in message ... I can't seem to find help anywhere as I can't seem describe the most annoying problem. shadows on screen
Mart, thank you for answering. When starting in the safe
mode, I am still seeing the shadows. And I do have a start up disk, but would you believe I don't know how to use it? Sorry, this is all new to me. And if I do have a faulty video card, what is involved in repairing/replacing? Thanks you. -----Original Message----- Could be the video card or maybe just the drivers. shadows on screen
Ok Jan, well the fact that it is still doing it in Safe Mode doesn't sound
too promising, however just a *possibility* - when you substituted your monitor, did you also substitute the cable between the computer and the monitor? If not, do so - if only to eliminate it! But regarding the Emergency Startup (floppy) Disk, insert it into the A: drive and then boot (power-up) your machine. After a short while, you should be confronted with a black screen with white text in the form of a Menu. Option 1. being 'Help'. Either press Enter or wait for a while longer (30 secs.) when the machine will continue with all kinds of text scrolling down the screen and eventually ending with a blue screen with white text - The WinMe Emergency Help screen. You can scroll down or up using the the down/up keys and (probably) your mouse also. Whilst you are in BOTH the black/white AND the blue/white screens, note whether you can still see the 'shadows'. If so then you've pretty well confirmed the video card as being at fault. Under the circumstances, substitution/replacement is the only feasible option open to you - repairs are almost impossible to the home user. (Your computer may even have an on-board video adapter instead of a video 'card' - depends on the manufacturer/supplier - you will need to read the User Manual) At this stage, I would suggest you seek advice from your local computer shop/technician unless you would like to try to fix it yourself. In which case you need to start reading-up on your local computer magazines or library for 'practical' articles on changing components. Although a 'relatively' easy job, you do need to know what you're doing. HTH and good luck. Mart "jan" wrote in message ... Mart, thank you for answering.
