Newer Browser Needed for Some Web Sites
Hi 98 Guy and everybody,
UPDATE: On my "test" Win98se laptop, I set up internet access (DSL) and this time when I began to install KernelEx 4.5.2, the message, "Microsoft Layer for Unicode....." (required) appeared. I proceed to download the necessary components. When finished, I rebooted the computer. Next I installed FireFox 3.6 (version I use in WinXP). Next I installed flash player plug in V10.1 (WinXP version). TEST (Win98se): I launched FireFox 3.6, and as a test, I went to www.youtube.com. I had no trouble viewing a video. By golly it works!! Thanks Again to 98 Guy and everyone for your help, John |

Thanks Again to 98 Guy and everyone for your help, John Good to hear that. I've just gotten similar results as yours too, John, although I used the slightly older build of KernelEx (Final 4.50) and Firefox (3.5.8). (And I already had unicows, so that step was unnecessary). And as mentioned, Flash had to be updated (evidently to at least version 10.x). That was almost as much of a challenge, as Adobe seems to make it a bit difficult to simply find the *standalone* executable flash updates. One interesting anomaly I see in FF now is a thin black vertical bar at the end of some text in some places, but I can live with that. I think I read about someone else seeing that too, but I've lost the cite. This whole thing has proven to be a bit more tricky than I thought. I went back and tried it again (installing FF 3.5.8) on a clean backup, and that was fine, but trying to update the Flash Player (to 10.3) sometimes succeeds and sometimes doesn't (as checked on both the Adobe Flash page (where it shows a blank box), and within FF, where it says the plug-in has been disabled "for my protection" (even though it's new enough to avoid that warning (ver 10.3 and above). What a PIA. With a lot of trial and error in these tests, I've usually been able to get the Adobe Flash player plug-in it to finally install, but it sure is a bit of a PIA. Maybe the trick is to before you try to install Flash Player 10.3 (or above), first set the KernelEx compatibility tab on that file to WinXP SP2, and not just leave it as its default tab value), but I thought I had tried that before. Wonder if anyone else has had this problem. |

I'll repeat what I've already posted about installing Flash version 11: ================= I can tell you that version 11.1.102.62 will install on win-98 if you have the latest version of kernelex - I don't know if it will work with your 2-year-old version. This 11.1.102.62 version is a few months old, but newer versions don't seem to install so we might be stuck with this version for a while. It can be downloaded from he http://www.oldapps.com/flash_player....F76B0623E FAF If that link doesn't work, try this: http://www.oldapps.com/flash_player....=7361?download This is the "non-IE" version - which means this is for mozilla-based browsers (firefox, etc). Just remember that you need to change a few registry keys before you install version 11 of flash so that it thinks you have win-2k instead of win-98. If this key does not exist, then create it: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion In that key, create a new string value and call it "CurrentVersion". For it's value, make it "5.1" Next, navigate to this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion Change the value for Version from "Windows 98" to "Windows NT" Change VersionNumber from "4.10.2222" to "5.1" Remember - change the VALUE of those strings - don't change their NAMES by renaming them. To change their value, right-click on them and select MODIFY. You can download old versions of flash from Adobe, but you might have to download the developer package (can be over 100 mb) just to get the flash player installer. |

Since I'm still using KernelEx Final 4.50, I'm not sure if Flash 11 will install, but will consider doing it if I can't get Flash 10 to work (10 seems to be sufficient for the few sites I've checked, but I haven't checked all that many). I'm still not sure about something. After KernelEx is installed, do you or don't you have to use those compatibility tabs (Properties, KernelEx tab)? I'm not sure when the KernelEx "default" values are or are not sufficient (instead of having to specify specific OS compatibility in the tabs for some applications, like FF or Flash). |

I have messed with those before when installing something new (usually something related to putzing around with multi-media files). The default KernelEx setting is almost always ok, and if you change the setting and it helps you to get further along with installing or running something new then there's nothing wrong with that - but I find that if the default setting doesn't work then changing it doesn't usually make you happy in the end. When changing the setting does work, I've found that changing it to Win-2k compatibility is usually what does the trick. |

You can reduce risk of transfer error, ambiguity and post size with this: Copy and paste the following to an empty plain text file, saved as X.reg, then merge that with the registry using a right-click on the file's icon. REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion] "CurrentVersion"="5.1" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion] "Version"="Windows NT" "VersionNumber"="5.1" Might be wise to keep this too in case you ever need to revert: REGEDIT4 [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion] ;Semicolon to the immediate left means this is a comment, ;and the dash starting the branch line above deletes that branch. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion "Version"="Windows 98" "VersionNumber"="4.10.2222" |

If either of you is willing, I have a small experiment to suggest. (Not got
it setup here so I'm not ready to do it, but it's harmless). Get some FLV out of the browser cache after viewing with this late Flash. See if it plays in the standalone Sothink FLV player... Any takers? Could be useful info for all and sundry, not just for me. One thing: make sure it IS a late version FLV too, something you know wouldn't play before you did this update... |

About that, check that your install isn't already using this bit of NT- fooling for some other subsystem because it may cover many keys, but other than that, the reg-file methods I posted are safe, both reversible by each other. |

Looks like an XviD VFW codec uses it, so any number of other things might, so the reversion-to-W98 reg file is better like this: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion] "CurrentVersion"=- ;Deletes single key, preserving all others under that branch. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion "Version"="Windows 98" "VersionNumber"="4.10.2222" |
