X98. An experimental variant of W98 SE.

It has USB support, ASPI, and a few other things the original needed as
extras. 48 bit LBA support for hard disks is possible, but as my preferred
way is NOT free to distribute, I include notes in the INST module about
various ways to get your own support and test it.

It creates a very tiny registry from scratch, so you can keep track of
everything that ever gets added, based on the cleanest starting conditions I
could make. 98-Lite's smallest install is a lot larger than this. And in an
age where a 'rescue disk' is now expected to be a fully loaded CD at minimum,
X98 might be a welcome alternative base to start from, expecially given the
minimal and modular approach to install engine and registry.

I don't know how much work I'll put into this, other than maybe to get the
network (INET) module built, but I will try to keep it online for a while.

I probably won't play with it - at least not for a year or two. I have
genealogy stuff from way back last November to catch up on, and in the
meantime have become used to XP (which seems to be entering the place
'9x had about five years ago: there are going to be a LOT of people who
know how to beat it into submission - though few if any to the extent
that I sense you have with X98).

Once again, I feel rotten: I've been the one encouraging you to develop
X98, and now it's (half) finished, I say I'm not going to play with it.
I would say I will eventually, and I sort of hope I will, but I know
myself too well to see there being _too_ much chance. But I hope my
encouragement has been helpful, anyway! And I _hope_ it wasn't just for
me that you've done all the work, but for others and for yourself.

First time I've looked at your void site. Is the Ghost guide available
as a .zip? Looks most useful.

The Ghost guide was in a ZIP, I think I can do that again. About X98, just
unzip the Core module to some blank bootable partition on any old i386
machine you can find, and reboot. Apart from that, everything else would take
time, but that one quick test should be enough to remind you later if it's
worth looking at again or not.

Thinking further on this, the 'dark' grey isn't. I guess my ELO 17" LCD is
bright, certainly brighter than the old 19" Iiyama CRT I used to use, but
your description makes me think your monitor is unusually dark, because that
grey background isn't that dark at 64,64,72 decimal. I'm not convinced that
page looks right, but bold text might be my first attempt at any fix before
messing with the colours. I'm not set on it, but I like odd colour mixes.
Even if I change it, there's no guarantee anyone else will like it any
better.

But before reboot, export your current W98 license details from the root of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion to fill the X98-
USER.REG file. It's a small inconvenience, but no worse than copy/paste of a
Usenet posting or wep page. I can't make it any easier without being illegal.


It's worth the time to make this small test, and it will likely decide what,
if any further exploration may happen. Apart from that registration thing,
the core is ready to go. Even the Inst module doesn't ask much. The long term
stuff is what gets done with it all after that, if anything...

I'm onto this now, look soon for a small green icon below the psychedelic one

I too think XP has entered that domain. But that's as far as it goes. :-)
And yes, it's pretty much beaten into submission, with a fair number of
tweaks and modifications along the way. The first thing that went was that
stupid default XP Start Menu :-)
