Default Critical Updates KB867282 & KB891781

Can someone please explain in clear, direct English, as opposed to what is
on the WU site, what loss in OS or IE functionality will result from
downloading the latest two security updates? (KB867282 & KB891781)

For the previous update, I lost Help Troubleshooter, but managed to bring it
back thanks to the Dundat Workaround plus some expert help from the board.
Will I need to reinstall this? Or apply other fixes for other problems?

I'm afraid I've finally reached the point where downloading a critical
security update has become a cost/benefit decision.

While no one can guarantee it, neither *critical* security update /should/
cause you any problems, Roger. Each was beta-tested in Win98. If on the
off-chance they do, both are fully uninstallable via Add/Remove Programs.

These updates are only available for Win9x users via Windows Update.

To assure a clean install, your anti-virus application should be disabled
and all other running processes closed before installing anything, including
Windows Updates.

Can someone please direct me to the latest cumulative update for IE6SP1 for
98?

Update 867282 MS05-014

I'm really in need of a manual download link for this, not through Windows
Update.

Thanks.

It doesn't appear that there is one for Win98. You'll need to launch
your ISP software and its processes, modem , etc., and then use Windows
Update... just remember that "to assure a clean install, your anti-virus
application should be disabled and *all other running processes closed*
before installing anything". Good luck with that.

But, a little birdie tells me that in my TIF folder there is a
functional 3.48MB file named:
E6.0sp1-KB867282-Windows-98-ME-x86-ENU_82d59697d62dfa0d9a852443cbd6125[1].exe

Of course, you can't ask me to email that to you, even if that is a
valid email address in your header, because it is illegal to distribute
such things. ;-)

Thanks.
Got the file using P2P.

Why does MS play these kind of games?
Why not just post the file so their Windows 98 customers can get them
without a hassle?

I was pretty sure you would figure out a way to get it. I wouldn't think
that I was the first to snag it(along with the other 2 in this last
batch)from the TIF folder.

I got a 6 dial-up clients with 98, so it's easier for me to just burn
them to a CD rather than go through the tedious dial up crap at their
houses and offices.(Hypothetically speaking of course, I would never
distribute the files because that is ILLEGAL.) They're on Netzero and
AOL, which just exasperates the situation. They pay for slow service AND
popups. Go figure.

Why does MS play these kind of games?

I have no idea about that. I could speculate, but what's the point?
Their game, their rules, their power trip. "The Phone Company" used to
behave that way too, but we've seen their fate, so just keep on smilin'.

Forgive me for sounding a bit incredulous ... but you DON'T TRUST the
Windows Updates site but you DO TRUST some anonymous stranger you've never
met? For your sake I hope there are no hidden surprises in the file you
downloaded.

From MS05-014:

quote
Are Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Millennium Edition
critically affected by one or more of the vulnerabilities that are addressed
in this security bulletin?

Yes. Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition
are critically affected by the vulnerabilities that are addressed in this
security bulletin. Critical security updates for these platforms are
available, are provided as part of this security bulletin, and can be
downloaded only from the Windows Update Web site.

Let me repeat: "Critical security updates for these platforms...can be
downloaded only from the Windows Update Web site."

It is best to get them from Windows Update. You are correct as usual,
Robear. :
