Default Invalid long filename

After booting and about the middle of scan, this message appears: ScanDisk
detected an invalid long filename entry on this drive but was unable to fix
it. To fix this problem run Scandisk for Windows. After OK, ScanDisk
continues and completes scanning.

Mouse is functioning but all the following windows (Win32sl, Msdicw) will
show: This program performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
After closing these windows, all that remains is a blank Windows sky blue
screen (not the BSOD) and the still functional mouse pointer. It just
stopped at that point. Rebooting just repeated the same problem all over
again.

I did the scanreg /restore option but the same problem keeps popping. Any
help would be most appreciated.

Can you boot to Safe Mode? Hold down or repeatedly press the Ctrl key as the
system is starting up, until you see the Startup Manu. Choose Safe Mode.
What happens?

OK. Now, Scandisk is running at startup automatically? Have you, since this
episode began, let Scandisk fix anything at all? I know the error you're
reporting prompts you to use Scandisk in Windows (SCANDISKW.EXE) to fix that
particular problem, but did you let it fix anything else at any point? And
why did Scandisk come up the first time? Did you have some kind of problem
that required a hard reset? Does Scandisk name the problem file?

My gut feeling is that the name-length error is unrelated to your startup
problem. But I'd like a bit more history before suggesting anything.

Gary,

Actually, somebody meshed up my computer. I found it, one afternoon, as I
described before (... a blank Windows sky blue screen (not the BSOD) with
the mouse pointer...) and when I restarted it, those problems showed. So I
do not have any clue how it came about.

I was not able to use SCANDISKW.EXE since I need to be inside Windows to do
this and my computer wont let me in (or is there a way to do this?).

Explorer & IE are basically one & the same. Therefore, may as well try
this write-up, originally from a Gateway WEB site, which is a temporary
reversion to an earlier version of IE...

ONE THING: Do nothing more than stated here using Winfile, because, if
you move a file with it, you will lose that file's LFN (Long File Name)
in the destination.

Desktop Icons and Taskbar Are Missing

Affected Products: Software, System CDs
Affected Operating Systems: Windows® 98 , Windows® 98 SE,
Windows® Me

ISSUE: After starting Microsoft® Windows® 98 or Windows
Me, the taskbar is missing and there are no icons. When
starting Windows, the taskbar may flash on for a brief
second and then disappear. The only display visible is the
background wallpaper and the mouse cursor. Pressing
CTRL+ALT+DELETE brings up the Close Program dialog box,
but selecting End Task on the items on the list may not
have an effect. When the computer is started into Safe
mode, the issue still occurs. Running Scanreg /Restore
does not resolve the issue.

There have been several reports that the issue occurred
when restarting the computer after receiving a dialog box
that displays "Virus/spyware found. Do you wish to
remove?" or "Do you want to install Spyware Monitor?" The
dialog box only has Yes or No selections, and selecting
either can cause the issue. There is no X to close the
dialog box, however pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE to bring up
the Close Program dialog box lists a "Remove found
spyware?" entry, which can be end tasked.

(1) Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, & click Shut Down.

(2) After the computer has been shut down, turn on the computer. Hold
CTRL as you boot for the Startup Menu, or begin pressing the F8 key in
one-second intervals. If you complete this step successfully, the
Microsoft Windows Startup Menu is displayed. If no menu is displayed and
Windows starts up normally, repeat this step.

(3) At the Microsoft Windows Startup Menu, use the ARROW keys to select
"Command Prompt Only", and then press the ENTER key.

(4) At the command prompt, type:
EDIT C:\Windows\System.ini
Press ENTER.

(5) In the C:\Windows\SYSTEM.INI file, locate the line of text under the
[boot] section that lists "Shell=Explorer.exe". This is typically the
third line in the file.

(6) Edit the "Shell=Explorer.exe" line by deleting the "Explorer.exe"
text and replacing it with "Winfile.exe". The line should list the
following:
Shell=Winfile.exe

(7) To save the changes...
(a) Press the ALT+F+X keys separately.
A "Save File" requestor appears.
(b) Press ENTER to save the changes and return to the command prompt.
(TAB navigates the buttons of the requestor.)

(8) At the command prompt, restart the computer by pressing the
CTRL+ALT+DELETE keys. Once Windows has restarted, it starts into the
Windows File Manager (Winfile.exe).

(9) In the File Manager window, double-click "progra~1" in the left
hand window to open the Program Files folder.

(10) Double-click "intern~1" in the left hand window to open the
Internet Explorer folder.

(11) Double-click "setup" in the left hand window to open the Setup
folder.

(12) In the File Manager window, double-click "Setup.exe" in the right
hand window to launch Internet Explorer setup.

NOTE: If the setup folder is not available, Internet Explorer has not
been updated and a previous version of Internet Explorer cannot be
restored. You cannot use this method. Close "Winfile", shut down, & post
back, or try the URL at the very bottom of this post, which is an
over-install of IE.

(13) In the Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools Setup window, click
OK.

(14) In the Setup Message dialog box, click Yes to restore the previous
version of Internet Explorer.

(15) Internet Explorer setup removes components.

(16) In the Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools - Restart Windows
dialog box, click Restart Windows.

When the computer is restarting, hold CTRL for the Startup Menu, or
begin pressing the F8 key in one-second intervals. If you complete this

step successfully, the Microsoft Windows Startup Menu is displayed. If
no menu is displayed and Windows starts up normally, repeat this step.

(17) At the Microsoft Windows Startup Menu, use the ARROW keys to select
Command prompt only, and then press ENTER.

(18) At the command prompt, type:
EDIT C:\Windows\System.ini
Press ENTER.

(19) In the C:\Windows\SYSTEM.INI file, locate the line of text under
the [boot] section that lists "Shell=Winfile.exe". This is typically the
third line in the file.

(20) Edit the "Shell=Winfile.exe" line by deleting the "Winfile.exe"

following:

(a) Press the ALT+F+X keys separately.

(b) Press ENTER to save the changes and return to the command prompt.
(TAB navigates the buttons of the requestor.)

(22) At the command prompt, restart the computer by pressing the
CTRL+ALT+DELETE keys

(23) Windows starts to a blue screen, but will still be
accessing the hard drive for a period of time. When
finished, Windows is on the desktop with icons, but an
older version of Internet Explorer is installed. You
should update your antivirus software, and then perform
Windows Update to install a new version of Internet
Explorer again.

PCR,

Thank you for your concern.

I followed your outlined procedure but after step (8), those windows
"performed illegal operations..." appeared again and no file manager showed
up. Also, during the reboot at 48% scan, the invalid long filenames error
message popped again.
When I rebooted the second time, same things happened and in addition, the
mouse lost its functionality.

I reverted back to shell=explorer.exe and I am back to my original problem.

Here's one thing. I'll separately post another.

I wonder: What are "Win32sl, Msdicw" that you mention in your first
post? If you don't know, it could be difficult to manage, but
consider...

http://cquirke.mvps.org/9x/virtest.htm - formal scanning
www.f-prot.com - free DOS-based av
www.nod32.com - free DOS-based av evaluation
www.sophos.com - free DOS-based av evaluation

........Quote..........
If you want to really check your machine, run a virus scan in DOS.
http://www.f-prot.com/products/home_use/dos/ free

Make sure you get the latest definitions which are accessible from the
same
page.

Create a new folder named fprot or whatever you wish, preferrably on a
separate drive/partition.
Extract the downloaded files to that folder.
Reboot to pure DOS from the startup menu by selecting DOS Command
Prompt.
At the prompt change to the drive/directory where the fprot folder is
at.
Once in the directory type: fprot\f-prot.exe and press Enter.

You will have to navigate with the keyboard if you have not set up the
mouse to
run in DOS.

Set up the scan as you wish and run it.

When finished press Alt+F and close.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del or type win at the prompt to reboot.

Well, there was another who also could not get to Winfile. I believe he
did get to Command.com, though-- the Windows DOS (in a box) version,
which I think is necessary to run these. (Just the DIR statements can
also be done in True DOS, i.e., a direct boot to Command Prompt Only.)

(1) Set "Shell=Command.com" in System.ini, [Boot] section. Can you boot
to it? If so...

(2) Do these DIR, to see what you have...

(a) DIR C:\Progra~1\Intern~1\Setup\Setup.exe /a

(Those are tilde-one [~1]. This Setup.exe will revert you to a prior
version of IE. To run it, just enter...

C:\Progra~1\Intern~1\Setup\Setup.exe

If it gets you back to Windows, you should go to Windows Update & see
what is offered.)

(b) DIR C:\ie?setup.exe /a /s

(That is a question mark. These will over-install IE. If you have
both IE6 & IE5, try IE6, thus...

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ie6setup.exe", or
"C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files\ie6setup.exe"

You NEED the quotes. And that presumes you have one in the same folder I
do.)

Here are what I get at the DIR...

C:\DIR C:\Progra~1\Intern~1\Setup\Setup.exe /a
Directory of C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup
SETUP EXE 353,280 10-20-00 12:00a SETUP.EXE
1 file(s) 353,280 bytes

C:\DIR C:\IE?Setup.exe /a /s
Directory of C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer
IE5SETUP EXE 511,616 08-10-01 10:34p ie5setup.exe
IE6SETUP EXE 490,608 09-26-02 10:53p ie6setup.exe
2 file(s) 1,002,224 bytes

Directory of C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files
IE6SETUP EXE 490,608 09-26-02 10:53p ie6setup.exe
1 file(s) 490,608 bytes

Directory of C:\Windows Update Setup Files
IE5SETUP EXE 511,616 08-10-01 10:34p ie5setup.exe
1 file(s) 511,616 bytes

(3) Remember to set it back to "Shell=Explorer.exe" in System.ini,
[Boot] section.

There may be a line in DOSStart.bat that will give one a DOS mouse.
Try...

DOSStart

....at the DOS Prompt, to run it. The line in mine is:
"c:\mouse\mouse.exe".

(a) "START button, Find, F/F, DOSstart.bat".
(b) Don't click it-- It would run, as any .bat will.
(c) R-Clk it, instead, & select "Edit".
Do you see a line mentioning the Mouse, such as...
c:\mouse\mouse.exe

DOSStart.bat normally runs by...
"START, Shut Down, Re-start in MS-DOS Mode"
....to provide that mouse.
