Default Manual set default gateway

Am I missing something? I have set up a clean install of Windows 98 with a
3C905TX NIC. Everything went fine but when I try to install a default
gateway, it shows up in network properties but not in winipcfg or ipconfig.

Then at the command prompt a ping of yahoo.com shows the DNS address but
cannot contact the site indicating that the gateway is not functioning.

How do I fix this?

Dale
