Default Explorer has caused an error in

I am receiving the following message whenever I try to get
into Windows Explorer, or Control Panel, or when double
clicking on My Computer:

Explorer has caused an error in unknown.
Explorer will now close.

If you continue to experience problems,
try restarting your computer.

-----------------

Needless to say, restarting the computer has not solved
anything. Any advice anyone can give me on how to solve
this will be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you in advance,
Christian

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mca...rt/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...CWShredder.exe
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

Try BHODemon - from http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/bhod/

Download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

(thanks to Graham Womack for the following)
Do all this in Safe Mode.......
Make a Restore Point - just in case it gets worse.
Using Regedit, search for 'Safeguard'. Make a note of the dll name (if
there's an entry at all).
Run BHODemon. Look for the same dll name The 'Details' key should give you
more information about when the entries were loaded. Disable the registry
entry.
Search your hard drive for the dll file (should be in Windows\System).
Rename it and a similar named lib file - change the extensions.
Reboot, cross your fingers and try 'My Computer'

Not the original one from this particular thread, Rick - although OE's
threading model makes it look like it, I suspect that the CDO has different
threading.
FWIW, here;s the response I gave the OP in this thread - one Mow time!
(with apologies - couldn't resist it)

To all with the desktop problem (not being able to access
files or "my computer" on desktop): replacing the current
desktop software with the newer Java stuff worked
perfectly and solved my problem within minutes after days
of frustration.

Go here and look on the top right corner:

You may have been lucky - this will NOT work on most people's systems,
AFAIK!
