I have a IBM NetVista PIII 800mHz model running Windows98. I can't get
it to produce sounds - the only sounds I do hear are occasional beeps at the very beginning of a start up. It has a built in audio in, out, and mic in. But I get no sound with speakers or head phones. Any suggestions on how to solve this prob? AND - if you can help even further - I can't get my usb epson 740 inkject printer recognized. Anybody? thanks - ray |

The standard cure for audio problems is to remove the audio card via / start / settings / control panel / system / device manager and then reboot, so the PC finds the audio card as "new software" and prompts you to instal its drivers and associated software. But this does not help if you have "sound on board" built into the motherboard and some part of its circuitry fails. (I do not know how often this happens. It happened to me.) If so, the only cure is to disable SoB in BIOS and add an audio card to the PC, installed the standard way. AND - if you can help even further - I can't get my usb epson 740 inkject printer recognized. Anybody? Most USB printers are USB version 2 which did not exist when Win98 was issued (including USB.v.1). That is why Win98SE was issued (inc. USB.v.2.) -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

First, has the speaker pin been removed and replaced for any reason? If so,
make sure it did not get plugged into the modem instead of the sound card port. Right click My Computer, properties and then select the Device Manager tab. Are there any problems listed under Sound, Video and Game Controllers? Is your sound card listed? Along with these answers, tell us if you have a disk with audio drivers. Did the printer work at one time and now it is no longer working? Please provide more details on the problem--what have you done, what did the PC do, etc. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "98remembered" wrote in message oups.com... If not you will need to identify it and install the correct drivers. Check first of course to be sure it's not set to "mute" AND - if you can help even further - I can't get my usb epson 740 inkject printer recognized. Anybody? Look in device manager to see if you even have USB. If not, the first thing to check is that it's enabled in the BIOS |
