Default Adding a network printer

I have a home network. 2 desktops with xp, 1 laptop win2k and a laptop with
win98SE.

I have a HP PSC 1210 printer to which I want to use from the Win98 machine
(the printer is attached to one of the XP machines).

I've run the printer wizard and can select the printer (printer sharing is
enabled), I then get a screen that lists on one side a number of manufaturers
and on the other side a list of machines from each manufacturer (we will
call this screen A).

Below this is "have disk" - I select this option and direct the search to
the Cd with the drivers. I select the driver and am brought back to Screen A
- but this time the two windows are blank (where the manufacturers name etc
are).

I click next and nothing happens - I've tried copying the installation files
to the hard disk - no luck.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks

Can you browse to the printer? Try rightclick-install.

I have an Epson printer and installing it via the software is the correct
way to install-- not via install printer. Once installed run the install
network printer

Usually, if the printer driver software is different for the two different
operating systems, you must use the driver for that specific operating
system.

However, since a PSC is not limited to printing, there may be other issues
involving a remote scan as well. The scanning software is dependent of the
previous driver installation for it to work.

Have you tried the hp website?

I tried HP and they said that the problem was that the printer is attached to
an XP machine and so there is no way that I can connect the win98 machine to
the printer.

I phoned Microsoft and they seemed to think that it is ok but wanted 50
pounds+ before they would help.

There is an option in my printer control panel for installing drivers for
other operating systems but this keeps asking for a disc called "windows 95,
98 and Me" and I don't have that - the chap from microsoft thinks this is a
disk they sell.

I downloaded win98 drivers from the net but still have the same problem.

With my HP 3820 I can use the new 7.1 drivers under 98SE but must use the old
drivers 5.x to allow it to work in XP Pro. for some reason. Can you possibly
use an older driver? You must first unistall the current driver and perhaps
an older driver will install well and work for you too.

Sorry, I cannot help you any further. I do not know. Hopefully, someone
else has better ideas.
