Default reinstall of 98SE

Am reinstalling for the first time ('bout time, huh). The files are in
the cab section of the main HD. This is not to be an overlay.
1) Can I move the reg file to the slave hd? Is there a benefit such to
keep me from having to reinstall all of the "stuff" on the slave?
2) I suppose I will need to copy the info from the master HD on to a
cd and then install from that. If so, what file do I access to begin
this adventure.

TIA
Chas

You will not have a clean install if you use the same registry file. If you
are convinced that you need a fresh install for some reason, then go all the
way and don't take shortcuts. What you do need to do is back up any data
that exists on the C: drive so that once W98 and your applications are
reinstalled, you can use that data. For information on installing W98, go

Why do you need to reinstall? If you computer is just slow or acting funny,
always fixable. Well anyway, yes you can backup the registry. and backup
the start menu, desktop, my documents, etc. But it is a real pain. It
very hard to do. You have to selectivly delete some files in c:\windows\
and leave some files alone, or you'll have to reinstall your software.

Copy out or move the cabs Usually in c:\windows\options\cabs\ to another
directory where you'll know where it is. Back up your "important data".
Make a boot floppy to boot into DOS. Boot the disk, and delete everything
on the drive, except the CABs that you just moved, and your backup of your
"important data". Now just go into the CABs directory, and run setup.exe to
reinstall. after that, reinstall all of your software and go to
windowsupdate.microsoft.com to re-apply all the security patches.
