Basic 98 setup, maybe CD replacement
After using XP now for several years, I've found that it
is convenient to run one of my old applications on 98. So I took out my original genuine Microsoft Windows 98 Installation CD and allowed it to format a 6 GB hard drive and install. Everything went normal until about 7 minutes before it was complete, and then it started not being able to find a few dozen .dll files and 'networks' and 'protocol'. It asked me to put the CD in again, but it didn't seem to be able to find them. I ended up skipping all those files and allowed the installation to finish. It wouldn't surprise me if the CD, having been used maybe a dozen times on the last 5 years, is a bit dirty, but missing all those files seems strange. Yet I have no other explanation. Is there a way to check the CD? On line maybe? Or a way to obtain a replacement CD if I mail this one in? Or what do I do to get a full Win98 installation? Thank you. -- William B. Lurie |

What generally happens is the installation program is not looking in the
right place for the files. I suggest starting over and if it cannot find a file, hit the browse button and browse to the win98 folder containing the ..cab files. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "William B. Specifically, Ron, where would you suggest I direct it, when it asks for a location for a file? Something like E:\i386\something or other? Of course, I'm sure that at one time it looked for and found the files, and I can't see how it lost track of where to find the files it needs.......but the key words are "I can't see how....." -- William B.
