Default dat file icon changed - how to change back

All the DAT files have a Nero Multimedia icon against them.
How do I change the icon back?
Listing all the options under 'open with' does not give me the original DAT
icon.
In fact it warns me not to change it!

Using Tweak UI, icons restore, does not cure the problem.

It seems to have happened after I installed Nero 6 and did some critical
updates from MS.
AVG, XoftSpy, NoAdware, Spybot and CWShredder do not find anything.

Any help would be appreciated.

Leo,

If you want to return files with a DAT extension to the default icon with
no associated application you will need to use Regedit (Start | Run, enter
Regedit in the box and click OK), now carefully expand the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER branch in the left hand pane by clicking the + until you
reach
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\FileExts
Now select the sub-key .dat and delete this key and any sub-keys such as
OpenWithList. Now close regedit.

Remember that when using regedit you can cause major damage to your
operating system so only delete the .dat key (and any sub-keys) in the
location I have mentioned.

Mike,

Thanks for the info.

I had a feeling there wasn't a 'simple' answer.
I'll need to take a stiff drink before using regedit. On the other hand that
may be asking for trouble!

Mike,

I've removed the entries from HKEY_CURRENT_USER etc under .dat but it has
not changed anything, the icon and file type is still NeroMedia Player. If I
right click on a dat file, under OPEN WITH it still says NeroMediaPlayer.

However entering into the spirit of your suggestion I have found similar
enties for .DAT under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. These still contain the Nero
entries. I think I should delete this a well but as I don't know what I'm
really doing I would welcome a confirmation or comment.

Thanks Mike.

I've now changed the details of .dat in the ROOTS section as well as the
USER section and my icon is back to normal.

I hope I don't have to do it every time there is a Nero upgrade!

At least it has help me learn a bit more about Regedit.

Leo,

Using Regedit, browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.dat
Delete all subkeys.
Highlight .dat.
In the right hand pane the only entries should be:
(Default) = (value not set)
and a string
NoOpen which has no data

It's never happened here but then again I don't bother installing the Nero
media player. Note though that such changes are simply cosmetic and have
no effect on the contents of files with a dat extension.

Regards,
