Default Keyboard Failure & Start Up In Safe Mode

A while back, I switched to cable for internet access. Upon hooking up the
cable modem, every time I boot up the computer I get a keyboard failure
message. However, both my keyboard and mouse work fine. This is only a
problem when I want to start my computer up in safe mode. Then, I am unable
to do so because of the keyboard error. I run my disk maintenance
applications in safe mode; otherwise, they don't work properly.

Any advice?

Your keyboard and/or mouse are USB??
Did you install a new mouse/keyboard at the same time? Did you perhaps make
a change in your BIOS at the same time as installing the modem? - check the
settings for USB Legacy support in the BIOS, and make sure it's set to
'ON/Enabled' for any options found

Noel,

Keyboard are mouse are USB and came with the computer. BIOS looks fine.
Since I just now figured out how to view the BIOS, I'm sure I've never
changed it. I'm really desperate.

Thanks,
debba

So USB Legacy is enabled in BIOS??

Hmmm - last time I met something similar, it was a problem with RAM....
download docmemory from www.simmtester.com and create the boot disk. use
this to boot the pc, and run the test overnight to check the ram thoroughly.
see what it reports.

Noel,

I ran SimmTester and it showed "Passed" in all areas. Soooooooooo, I
decided to take a look at the back of my computer -- no easy task given my
set up. I finally noticed that when The Cable Guy hooked my modem, he put
the plug into #1 and the keyboard into #2. I guess this configuration made
keyboard recognition come to late to be able to start Safe Mode.

I do appreciate your help and you always provide great tips which I print
out for future use. Keep up the great work!

1992 or earlier? I think I've still got an old Viglen keyboard vintage
1989 or 90 that has a dsub 9 serial connection. I still use the 3½/5¼
combo floppy drive from that box in a machine today. One never knows when
one will want to access an old 5¼ floppy. g Whilst I still have a few
archival 5¼ floppies I don't think one has been near a floppy drive for at
least ten years.

I have here an old AT keyboard for emergencies - the big DIN plug type - but
I can't remember the last time I saw a 9-pin COM plug on a keyboard.

Computer and Keyboard are both September 2001 (Dell). Cable box was
supposedly new when installed in April, 2005.

The keyboard should be going into the proper port - not a COM port! Assuming
the PC was new when you got it, all machines at that time used small DIN
plugs for such things - same as the mouse ports (which creates its won
problems if you're colour-blind!)
