faster CPU for Win98se
I still have and use an old Dell 233Mhz running Win98se.
Of course we also have several Win/XP Pro laptops in the house, but I still use the Win98se desktop... Anyway - the CPU speed (233Mhz) & max memory (64meg) of the motherboard has become more and more of a problem.... If I get a faster old box - and can get Win98 drivers for sound, video, etc are there any other issues related directly to the CPU or speed ? |

If you check the previous posts you'll see that subject was just covered...and it seems that for the most part win98se should work with a fast cpu. I know there have been some reports of problems...but if you can get the chipset drivers for your mobo I doubt you'd have any trouble. There is one vcache tweak usually needed for ram above 512 megs... |

Your motherboard might support a faster CPU and more memory. Have you looked at that? There might even be a bios update available for it. If you are expecting to walk into a big-box retailer and pick up a new "box", it's highly unlikely that the computer you get will have win-98 drivers available for it even if you search the net for them. Certain motherboard chipsets made by, for example, Intel, no longer have win-98 drivers. If you are comfortable with working with computer components and can remove and replace the motherboard yourself, then you can get certain motherboards where win-98 drivers are available for the chipset. You might want to look for this post I made a few weeks ago in this news group: Installing 98se on modern hardwa Asrock 775DUAL-VSTA motherboard I have found that the Asrock 775Dual-VSTA motherboard works very well in Windows 98. It's one of very few motherboards that supports all currently available Intel CPU's (including Core 2 duo's) as well as having both a PCI-e and AGP slots. Web site for that board is he http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.as...l=775Dual-VSTA If you have no prior experience with building a computer from components, then I'd recommend that you take your existing computer to a smaller local computer shop where they can order you a new motherboard (like the Asrock I mentioned above) and they can swap it in for you. You will probably also need to replace the existing power supply, and you will also need memory and a CPU. I recommend the Intel Celeron D 360 (3.46 ghz) and not a Core or Core-2 for Win-98 because win-98 will only make use of 1 core so the purchase of a multi-core CPU would be a waste. I have just ordered 8 of those motherboards for work plus a few for home, and I'm waiting for the Celeron D 365 (3.6 ghz) to become available for purchase (for some reason they don't seem to be in the distribution channel yet). |

I have found that the Asrock 775Dual-VSTA motherboard works very well
in Windows 98. Who'da thunk it, with it not listing 9x in the OS section. :/ |

The only component so far that I have not yet seen a win-98 driver for is the high-definition 7.1 audio device that is present on many motherboards made within the past year or two. As for PCI-e video cards and win-98, I'm in the process of sourcing some Nvidia boards that do not have "turbo-cache" (TC). TC has been speculated as being incompatible with win-98. |
