upgrade to USB 2.0
I bought a usb 2.0 2 port pci card. After I installed it, Windows wanted
me to insert the Win-ME disk to find some usb drivers. I bought the system with windows preinstalled and all I have are some system recovery disks (which require complete reformatting). I don't have an ME disk. What should I do now? Thanks! -- Hugs, Erika |

Win Me doesn't include support for usb 2. You should have received the
usb 2 drivers with the PCI card when you bought it, if not check the manufacturer's web site. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Erika wrote: I bought a usb 2.0 2 port pci card. It did include a cd with drivers, but when I try to install it, it keeps asking for different usb dll's, like hotplug.dll, usbd.sys, etc, and also openhci.sys. I made a list of what it's asking for. It looks like I could find most of these drivers etc on the internet. Where would I put them? I went to System properties - Device manager - usb etc and the yellow marks are gone. Do you think it would be safe to try out some of my USB devices and see if devices work when they're plugged in? I don't want anything to break. I know I have hot plug on my system because I have a camera card reader that I plug in and unplug via the system tray. I bought a new external hard drive and that's really what I want the USB 2.0 port for. Thanks so much!!! -- Hugs, Erika |

Look on your PC for the file BASE2.CAB and if located make a note of the directory containing this file. Now install your usb 2 drivers and when it asks for you to insert the Win Me CD point it instead at the folder containing BASE2.CAB and it should then find the files it needs and complete the installation. I don't have BASE2.CAB. -- Hugs, Erika |

Are you really certain about that? Is it perhaps in a folder on a
different partition? If you really don't have BASE2.CAB and the rest of the Win Me cab files then you really have been screwed by the company that manufactured your PC - I just hope I never buy one from the same company. Unlikely of course as I build my own but such deliberate action by the company is disgraceful. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Erika wrote: Mike M wrote: Look on your PC for the file BASE2.CAB and if located make a note of the directory containing this file. Well, when I was trying to install this thing and it kept asking for the WIN-ME cd, that is exactly how I felt! I paid for a legit copy of the OS and it should be available to me. Of course, that was 4 years ago. Live & learn. Anyway, I just searched again and no dice. The cab files are probably on the system recovery disks but they're not accessible unless you know where they are. So now what? -- Hugs, Erika |

Have you checked your recovery disk? Look for a folder called Win9x and
see if that contains the Win Me cab set. The problem here is that recovery disks are produced by the computer manufacturer's rather than Microsoft and their composition varies. Since you received a recovery disk with your PC when you bought it and this can be used to restore the PC to the state it was in when purchased the company concerned has fulfilled their obligations to Microsoft. As for solving you more immediate problem, I have no other suggestion. At one time the driver files required for Win Me to install usb 1 ports were available for download from the net (from a third party site, not Microsoft) but that is no longer the case. They have either been removed because of copyright problems or because Win Me is now getting on a bit with many less users than four or five years ago. You could of course contact the computer manufacturer as they are legally obliged to provide support for Win Me as part of their contract with Microsoft. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Erika wrote: Mike M wrote: Are you really certain about that? It's hard to find anything on the recovery disks. I have 2 recovery disks, 1 driver disk and 1 application disk. Will the cab files be on the recovery disks? If I CAN find the drivers on the net, where should I put them? C:\windows, C:\windows\system ?? Will I break anything if I try the USB ports the way they are? -- Hugs, Erika |

Mike
The ,SYS files are available for download from here http://www.usbman.com/Drivers%20and%20Patches.htm although the usbauth.sys file link appears to be broken - it should be http://www.usbman.com/WebDrivers/Win...es/usbauth.sys (the only difference being the upper-case D in WinDrivers) -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Mike M" wrote in message ...
