Netbios over TCP/IP Greyed Out
I am trying to set up communication to a WINS server but the 'Netbios over
tcp/ip' is actually greyed out - with a tick. So perhaps this doesn't mean it's disabled - but why would it be greyed out? Again, I have three Win98 PCs and they are all like this. Can anybody help? Also, does anybody know how WINS and DNS sit together? ie if I type www.thisdomain.com (DNS) or type www (WIN name)? Or am I missing something? Many Thanks, Alex Kudrasev |

So perhaps this doesn't mean it's disabled - but why would it be greyed out? In Win 9x, ME and NT direct NMB hosting over TCP is not supported so NetBT (NetBIOS over TCP/IP) is required if you have a ms client or server bound to that TCP/IP instance. That's normal: NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled (with a tick) and can't be disabled. If you installed an additional NetBIOS-capable protocol (e.g. NetBEUI, IPX/SPX), it might let you disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. Also, does anybody know how WINS and DNS sit together? ie if I type www.thisdomain.com (DNS) or type www (WIN name)? Or am I missing something? WINS only resolves NetBIOS (computer) names, not Internet domain names like www.thisdomain.com . In a network with a server running Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003, DNS can resolve NetBIOS names, too, eliminating the need for WINS.
