Default Windows Update: Enternet Explorer and Internet Tools

I just reinstalled option #3, for the Windows Me, Restoration Disk, which
only reinstalls all of Windows Me's files. Because I've had problems with
the SUWIN file in the past, I both changed wmploc.dll to wmploc.old, and
returned IE 6.* to IE 5.5. Did the restoration so that I could use the
Windows Update, but now, although all went well with the Update web site, I
keep receiving an error message: i.e. "Setup was unable to install all the
components. Please close all application and try running Setup again. OK,
Help" I've closed all application, and run Setup again. I've closed all
application and I've "Resumed Setup" again. I've tried everything I know,
but the error message comes back everytime I try to finish the installation.
The installation begins, and the blue line goes to the right and at some
file the error message appears. Please help.

P.S. In "run/msconfig" theres a Resume Installation. Why

Have you been running with the Quack?
Are you running Norton System Quack - - errr - Doctor?
If so, then read on......

You may have up to 32,000 empty OEM*.INF files sitting in your
c:\Windows\INF folder, which prevents any program putting a legitimate *.INF
file in there (it also slow your system down to stop, trying to read them
and sort the [non-existent] contents!).
You need to DELETE all 0byte (and ONLY the 0byte) OEM*.INF files.
look here for information on how to do that , and how to prevent it
happening again (i.e. TURN OFF NORTON SYSTEM DOCTOR - unless you are
actively troubleshooting something)

The Symantec site:

also
"Computer Stops Responding (Hangs) During Setup, Installing Updates, or
Adding New Hardware"
also
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q301540
(which contains the fix for your problem in the NOTE under the patch
description)
Phone your Local MS office, and tell them your problem quoting Q301540 -
they'll either send you the patch, or give you a one-use password, for the
cost of the call.

Good Luck
