Office 97 help requested
Using a Compact deskpro, I am having a problem with the Excel program that is
on my Office 97. Every other program in the Office 97 works great except Excel. It has been working great and now when I try to open it I get a message that says “This program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down. I did put the Office 97 disk in and choose the option of “reinstall files. That did not work – I still get the same message. All help with this problem appreciated. Thanks. |

Hi Ross,
I dont have an answer for you, I dont think it is a Win98 problem though. I checked the server list for NewsGroups and there are at least 10 relating to Excel on this server, one of which is titled Crashes, give one of those a try. Apart from that, someone else here may know what is going on and you might get a reply from them. Gekko "Ross" wrote in message ... You will get better help with an Office or Excel problem by asking in an Office or
Excel forum or group, preferably for the version of Office/Excel you have installed. When you get an "illegal operation" error message, click the "Details" button, and post to the relevant forum with the exact details word for word, up to but not including the memory registers. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Ross" wrote in message ... Assuming Excel earlier ran OK under Ross's Win98, he should document if possible what changes were made to the OS that may have caused Excel to malfunction. Office97 was no doubt patched or upgraded before WinXP appeared: and it is possible that Win98 security patches have altered some DLL that Office uses. Office 97 help requested
Indeed... several IE/OE updates (and others) have altered system files used
by Office 97.. You may be able to check for the problem with "Dependency Walker" or another "debug" program, or an application monitoring program. You WILL find that several files from IE6/OE are causing errors and illegal function calls. {Hmm, didn't Excel produce an error log,,, don't remember) The work arounds may or may not work [files and registry].. so as suggested elsewhere, an uninstall and re-install may be the best solution. I have to qualify that though; as your other office programs appear OK, then Excel may have been affected by the last several month's updates from Microsoft [direct draw, activeX, directX, shwapi.dll, ole...dll, shdocvw.dll, cdfview.dll, etc.], but I can't help you with those, as I no longer have Excel installed locally, and service none using Excel from Office97. You might find an indication of a like problem found in the newer versions on Microsoft. You may [will] have difficulty re-installing Office97 in a fully upgraded Win98SE installation, as IE6 (and hence Explorer/system) has control of several files which Office 97 needs to downgrade/install during the installation (but can't); moreover, the installer may balk (old installer and routines). If and or when you uninstall/re-install, make sure you have the two service releases downloaded and ready for installation [check the corporate site]. Sr1off97.exe - 7,150KB sr2bof97.exe - 23,600KB If you use Word you may also want: wd97au.exe (supplied in one of the service packs I think) Office97-KB830354-ENU.exe - updated Word and other Excel had several others also, though their not presently on any of my HDs, so look for them at the site. NOTE: after installing these files [if you can get them to install], several of your updates/QFE will be void, and other progs, such as IE6 may not work correctly. I haven't checked the full Office 97 Pro re-installation and it's ramifications for a while, so you may [will] also need to go to WinUpdate site or corporate for additional files. Having stated the above: I personally never attempt to re-install Office 97 [or it's components] into an upgraded system. If it is requested or necessary; I start from a new installation of the OS and proceed through my normal step by step installation routine to negate or limit problems. [OS, drivers, programs, prog updates, prog customizations, OS updates, any prog updates that need installed AFTER OS updates, additional customizations, final device installations, final tweaks and customizations] After you have it re-installed: Burn a backup/image to cdrom. Save copies of your installation logs [Windows Update.log, iuhist.xml]... Burn all updates and files to cdrom. -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com/ "Most people, sometime in their lives, stumble across truth. Ross may find that Office97 is no longer supported. MSNews includes no English-language groups for this software. news:microsoft.public.excel will do just fine for Excel questions regarding any version of Excel. Similarly, there are numerous Office groups available (microsoft.public.office.*) where questions about any version of Office can be asked and answered. Assuming Excel earlier ran OK under Ross's Win98, he should document if possible what changes were made to the OS that may have caused Excel to malfunction. Lots of things are possible, but the actual error message may narrow it down considerably. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm |

... You really should try running, updating, reinstalling Office 97 on a fully updated Win98 system with IE6 SP1....it works just fine, with none of the issues you suggest. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Problems installing Office 97 in Windows 98 SE" - MSN search "Excel 97 problems" - MSN search http://search.microsoft.com/results....-US&FORM=QBME1 http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...sues+Office+97 http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...ms&btnG=Search Need I go on, changing the search terms will give massive amounts of information, problems, issues, etc.... Note of course that "I" have found my installation routine to limit the problems... You have no problems?
