Dial-up to Cable - Disable?
Thanks to all that reply.
Using Windows Me and cable modem connected through Ethernet board. I have just switched from a dial-up ISP to a cable ISP. With the dial-up I could disconnect / connect through software. My cable connection was established through IE / Options / Connections. It is connected when the OS is started and remains connected until the OS is shut down. I would like to have the ability to establish a connection when I want it and then disconnect it when not needed. Is there a way to do this that would be easier than unplugging the modem? Jim D. |

If you have a firewall like Zone Alarm, you can stop internet activity with
a mouse click. |

I am not sure, because I don't have a cable connection, but I think most cable companies expect you to leave the modem on 24/7. So you will need to look at other options. I do have ADSL, and I do leave my modem on 24/7. Of course, ADSL with PPPoE gives me a software application that I could use to close my computer off from the Internet, but I don't use the Enternet 300 connection software supplied by my ISP. I prefer to use a broadband router; I leave the PPPoE authentication to the router. I leave modem and router on 24/7. The Internet is always there whenever I turn on the computer. Consequently, I have never looked into any software applications of the type you seek. I think what you want to do is sufficiently different from the way most people use broadband that you are going to have to look for a solution. Thanks to all that have replied.
I will try to ask my question a different way. I have a 9 year old that uses the computer quite a bit and I want to control the connection to some degree - even with an internet filter. Windows XP has a utility that can set an icon in the QUICK LAUNCH menu area. A click on the icon allows a software choice to enable or disable the connection. The modem remains on but, essentially, the communication port from the computer is turned on or off. I realize that some third party SW may provide that function, but if it is already there an additional purchase isn't necessary. Is such a switch function available in Me? Sorry I wasn't clear the first time. Jim D. -----Original Message----- Thanks to all that reply. Using Windows Me and cable modem connected through Ethernet board. Sorry I wasn't clear the first time. A router is definitely a help for this one. You would have to check the manufacturer's sites because not all routers have this feature; but the Netgear FR114P can block access, or allow access by schedule and LAN IP address. -- Norman ~Win dain a lotica, En vai tu ri, Si lo ta ~Fin dein a loluca, En dragu a sei lain ~Vi fa-ru les shutai am, En riga-lint |
