Default Start up

I am puzzled by programs which start when Windows starts but are not included in
the StartUp folder or the start up part of the MSCONFIG FILE. Where are their
start up instructions filed? I have another file which starts correctly if its
shortcut is clicked but if the same shortcut is used in the StartUp folder it is
ignored. Any help would be most welcome as I'm baffled.
With kind regards,

Many thanks for your trouble, I am amazed that there are so many starting
points. I'll hunt them down as I prefer to be in command of my pc. I am in the
process of changing pc's at the moment hence delay in replying and my apologies.
It is not to a new one so I am wondering what the pc was used for. It was bought
new in sealed boxes but appears to have have served Compaq in its early days
with an unexplained partitioned HD and the oddest things in the partition
relating to a factory, fortunately not porno.
My thanks again.
With kind regards,

Basil Grose
