Missing system files
On boot up I get the messages c:windows\filename is either missing or
corupted. With XP I know you can repair your windows installation but I was wondering if you run the set up process of windows 98 will it reinstall everything or will it just repair what has been corupted any help appreciated. With Thanks |

You can recopy individual files from your instal CD by / start / run / SFC.EXE = System File Checker. 1. / Options lets you choose which parts of the hard drive to check, usually c:\windows\ and subdirectories. 2. SFC normally copies only from the instal CD, i.e. if you downloaded security updates earlier you may have to repeat this process. Many MVPs recommend against using SFC. It probably depends what file is corrupted in your PC. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

With Thanks John, Does it tell you the name of the file? Have you deleted a program recently instead of un-installing it? The file may be an orphan and a call to it remains in the Registry or Start Up group. If you get the name of the file try Start Run and enter Msinfo32. Open Software then select Startup. You may see what is calling for the file and where it starts from. If you can't locate the reference try Start Run and enter Msconfig. Look under the Startup tab. If it's there you can un-check it.
