Windows doesn't complete starting at times
At times my computer doesn't complete starting Windows when I turn it on. I
am running Windows98 Second edition. This problem began occuring just five days ago. At first it happened once or twice, now it is happening more frequently, almost every time I turn the system on. When I turn on the system, it proceeds to start and goes past the Windows 98 splash screen with the animated bar at the bottom and normally goes to a dos screen with a string of startup messages that appeared earlier in the process and then proceeds to build the desktop. When the trouble occurs, I go past the Windows splash screen the last dos screen comes up empty except for a cursor flashing in the upper left hand corner. To recover I then press a reboot button on the computer and the system comes up with a screen that says "Windows did not complete starting ...” and I have the list of options presented on how to proceed. At that point I just select option 1, normal start and the system comes up fine. What could be causing this new behavior? What could I do to trouble shoot it? TIA |

Found the problem: Dust inside the case and unseated card. Before going through a series of tests I wanted to eliminate the possiblity of an unseated board so I opened my case. I found a lot of dust and the my Promise Ultra66 EIDE Bus controller card slightly unseated. Seated the card cleaned up the dust. How can I fix that or bypass that part? Does the install get to the part where you select your Regional Settings. The time zone ?
