Default audio problems

I recently installed W98SE on a new computer.
I had a CD with many of the drivers required for
the on-board video and audio. The video seems to
be ok following the installation, but the audio has
problems. If I put an audio CD in the CD player
I get audio output but if I go the the 'sound' icon
in the control settings I am not able to play
sounds (the entire page appears gray and I am
not able to click on any areas). I find the same
problem on the multimedia icon on the control
page, i.e. the entire page has light gray text and
clicking does nothing. Any ideas what I might try
to improve this?

Try Device Manager, see if there is a problem there.

Control Panel System Device Manager.
