Connect + login + ?
My modem is now recognized (by some utilities). Via a My Connection
dialup, I now get a connect, and my ID and password are accepted, but then it sort of hangs in limbo. I never get the popup saying I am connected. Updating "watchers" fire up and look for new stuff, but shut down when they can't find anything. 3 different browsers can start up, but can't find any known operable URL. Trying Windows Update gets me a comment that either the server can't be found or something about the the DNS. I recall hearing of something called protocol handshaking, done after login... ???????????? Jim L -- Reporters complain that Guantanamo interrogators use psychological pressure on prisoners. What is the setup for your / Control Panel / Network ? It should include 1 client e.g. MS Logon 1 adapter (e.g. Dial Up Adapter listed under Manufacturer = Microsoft) 1 protocol e.g. TCP/IP You can add these via the icons in the window. Repost with more details. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

What is the setup for your / Control Panel / Network ? It should include 1 client e.g. MS Logon 1 adapter (e.g. Dial Up Adapter listed under Manufacturer = Microsoft) 1 protocol e.g. TCP/IP This isn't right. I see: Client for Microsoft Networks (I assume this is a default of some kind) Dial-Up adapter (I think I asked for this, but don't really know what it is) TCP/IP - Dial-Up Adapter Interestingly the network adapter listed in Control Panel / System / Device Manager (and its TCP/IP pal) does not appear with the above as it once did. (It doesn't work at all.) You can add these via the icons in the window. I don't understand. Via icons in what window? Repost with more details. Card: Intel(R) PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 CardBus II Computer: ThinkPad 770E /w Win98 Issue: Haven't got either network or modem to work since last Win98 meltdown. Info: I've removed and reinstalled both hardware and software repeatedly. Info: I'm new to both Win98 and networking. Info: I have a very puzzling network install problem I can describe too, for anyone who can help. Jim L -- Reporters complain that Guantanamo interrogators use psychological pressure on prisoners. I see: Client for Microsoft Networks (I assume this is a default of some kind) Dial-Up adapter (I think I asked for this, but don't really know what it is) TCP/IP - Dial-Up Adapter This looks OK. Alternative 1: Add one or of the other clients. Alt. 2: standard Win98 method of removing all and reinstalling all. You can add these via the icons in the window. I don't understand. Via icons in what window? When you select the Add button, you get a new set of windows with choices for the item or Manufacturer plus item. Everybody needs a manual in which they have confidence. I use Info World Windows 98 Secrets which deals clearly with modem configuration. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

They all tell you to do what you've already done - which didn't work. Meanwhile Win98 had another reformat-requiring meltdown. I've installed Win98 from scratch again and I'm doing all the right things again - and they all don't work again. Win98 invariably identifies the Intel combo card incorrectly.
