I have just had to reinstall Win 98 second edition on my old computer. But my
display is now stuck on 16 colors and 640x480 resolution. I tried to update
the driver for my video display adapter but it says the best one is
installed. I have no driver disk and i don't know the adapter manufacturer.

In addition after trying somethings without success my monitor display
begins to blink when browsing in internet.

Please help. Thanks.

Windows 98 will detect many varieties of video display adapter and install
the correct drivers for it, but if you are re-installing on a newer machine
then it is likely that the video display card you are using didn't even
exist when W98 was released. In that case, it probably won't be identified,
and a default VGA driver will be installed - the default resolution chosen
could be as low as 640x480 at 16 colours, depending on what features Windows
can detect.

The solution is to find and install the correct video display adapter
drivers for your card. There may have been a CD of drivers provided with
the machine (or with the card, if you bought it as an upgrade). If not, you
may be able to download the correct drivers from the video display adapter
manufacturer's www site, or from the www site of the machine manufacturer
(if the display adapter is part of the motherboard).

Otherwise, you may be able to get a suitable driver from any of the driver
download sites, or you could use a generic driver from the www site of the
video display chipset manufacturer. Software such as Everest can detect the
type of hardware you have installed.

When you get the correct drivers, follow the manufacturer's instructions for
installing them. You should then have access to all the display modes that
your hardware supports.

my god you just described my own personal hell. I lost my xp disk and had to
install 98 on my machine and am having the same problems. I even took out my
card and replaced it with an old display card i had when i used win98. Didn't
help. I thought for sure that would be the answer, but when i try to
download drivers, i get the same answers,: i've got the best one already,
blah blah. On the monitor, it says i have downloaded 1048 by 764 or
something like that, that i am used to but it never gives it to me, even tho
i restart the machine like it tells me too.
I remember when i used to install 98 i would have the darndest time
connecting to the internet. I did this time too. But i didnt go thru this
hell. What about you?

Have you succeeded Maidensolo to get graphics correctly?

yes win98 don't know your new graphic card so you can't let
win98 "search for the best driver", instead you must tell it
to install the driver *you* know is the correct one.

On the monitor, it says i have downloaded 1048 by 764 or somethinglike
that, that i am used to but it never gives it to me, even tho
i restart the machine like it tells me too.

if you still have graphics problems it could be interesting
to know what graphic card and display you have

I remember when i used to install 98 i would have the darndest time
connecting to the internet. I did this time too. But i didnt go thru

do you have problem connecting to internet too on that computer?
what kind of internetconnection or is that problem solved now?

this hell. What about you?

since Kubilay wrote "which was very useful" on the followup I assume
that he succeded in installing graphic drivers

the blinking sounds interesting.... or is interlace-flicker or
verry low refresh rate that is ment here perhaps? blinking 40 times
per second or more

anyway, microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion probably gets
more replys if your problem persists
