Default defragment problem

When I try to run the disk defragmenter the application
starts but then 'gets stuck'. It displays 1% complete and
then goes back to 0% complete - I have had it running for
many hours and it never goes beyond this point.

I have also tried to run scandisc and hit problems - it
says 'checking folders' and then comes up with 'checking
file allocation tables' and then back to 'checking
folders' etc. Again it has not gone past this point even
after many hours.

HELP!!!!

There are articles listed in the troubleshooters that deal with out of
memory problems; however, since you didn't list your message, I cannot tell
you which one might apply.
