Default new win98se install!?

hello group. I have a tricky challenge for you advanced techs:
I have a new Dell optiplex gx620 w/ dual 160gb hard drives.
I need to install win98se on C drive and already have winxp
on the D drive. My boot up screen shows optin for both os's.

Of course my win98 selection will hang and can not boot up.
Have all usb ports and sata hard drives. This must be a driver issue,
not sure?

why have 98 installed? well my freakin company needs this for network
(long story....)

any/all help is MUCH appreciated.

TIA

looking at system info screen:

Pentium D 2.80 GHz
1.00 GB ram

then you need this for win98

add the following to your SYSTEM.INI file

under the [vcache] header, add the line
MaxFileCache=512000

then see if it will boot for you :

no, still hangs. after long himem test,
can only go into safe mode.

this may turn into lengthly thread, but
do appreciate effort!

more sys info:
-usb optical mouse
-usb enhanched multimedia kyb
-pcie 256mb graphics

I'm surprised no-one else has jumped in :

so you got to safe mode? could you get there before?

I'm still leaning toward memory problems ....no evidence of trouble in
control panelsystemdevice manager when you are in safe mode ?

can you remove some of the memory and get it to boot ?

here is a link for some reading..

and try the suggestions from here

This has nothing to do with the drivers, it all has to do with installing 98
after XP. When dual/multi booting the oldest system should be installed first
and the newest last, otherwise the boot gets whacked.

One of the best places IMHO for info:
http://thpc.info/dual/repairdualboot.html

thanks Brian. yes I did find that out which
is why I have my re-installed XP on the D drive
(which works perfect.)
of course, the win98se was installed first onto C drive
[had to fdisk the xp out ]

anywayz, still hangs, now getting the internal stack overflow error.
changed the values, still NG. maybe I'll try actually removing ram chips.

thanks, I'll check out your html link next....

Does the Dell web site have any drivers or other information regarding
Windows 98 on your specific Optiplex model. I doubt it but you might
want to check.

In another post you indicated that you could boot into Windows 98 Safe
Mode on the machine. That indicates that the problem is most likely a
hardware/driver issue.

Bring up the Windows 98 Boot Menu (the one that allows you to choose
Safe Mode) and select the "Logged - Bootlog.txt" option.

When it hangs, reboot and go back into Safe Mode. You will find two
hidden bootlog files in the root directory of the boot drive:
bootlog.txt = the bootlog from the successful startup in Safe Mode
bootlog.prv = the bootlog from the failed attempt to boot normally.

The last few entries in the the bootlog.prv file should show you where
in the boot process the normal startup failed. You can also download
the free bootlog analyzer from
http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/terrace/pk29/ and use it to look at
the content of the bootlog.prv file.

Good luck

Did 98 boot before you reinstalled XP, at least to Safe Mode as Ron mentions?
